Chapter 9 - The Baptism of the Heir

A month later, the private chapel on the estate grounds was bathed in the warm, golden glow of hundreds of flickering candles.

It was a private, highly secure ceremony—only my most trusted enforcers, Viktor, and a handful of loyal household staff were in attendance. The heavy oak doors of the chapel were locked from the inside, guarded by heavily armed tactical units.

In the center of the altar stood Father Thomas, a quiet, aging priest who had served the Rossi family for decades, holding a silver baptismal bowl filled with holy water.

I stood beside the altar, dressed in a sharp, tailored black three-piece suit, holding infant Leo in my arms. He was dressed in a pristine white silk gown, wide-eyed and staring curiously at the glittering chandeliers overhead.

The heavy side door of the chapel opened, and Clara walked down the central aisle.

She wore a floor-length emerald silk dress that highlighted the striking elegance of her features. As she approached the altar, the candlelight caught her hair, and for a fleeting, beautiful second, the ghost of the past completely faded, leaving only the reality of the present.

She stopped beside me, gently resting her hand on my shoulder before reaching out to take Leo into her arms.

“Are you ready?” she asked softly.

“Always,” I replied, looking down at our son.

Father Thomas raised his hand, beginning the ancient Latin prayers of blessing. The deep, resonant voice echoed off the stone arches of the chapel, washing away the sins of blood, violence, and betrayal that had stained this family for generations.

As the cold holy water was gently touched to Leo’s forehead, he didn't cry. He let out a soft, contented coo, reaching up to grab one of Clara’s fingers.

“I baptize thee, Leo Lorenzo Rossi,” Father Thomas intoned quietly, making the sign of the cross.

A profound, spiritual weight seemed to lift from my shoulders. The cycle of blood and vengeance that had defined my father’s reign—and the first half of mine—was officially broken.

When the ceremony concluded, the small gathering applauded softly. Viktor offered a rare, respectful nod from the back pew.

As Clara and I walked out of the chapel into the sunlit courtyard, hand in hand with Leo sleeping peacefully in his carrier, I knew that the empire I commanded was no longer built merely on fear and bullets.

It was built on blood, loyalty, and a love that had risen like a phoenix from the ashes of betrayal.
