Chapter 3 - The DNA Deception

The digital file on my encrypted phone screen glowed with a harsh blue light in the quiet nursery.

DNA Match Discrepancy: Remains interred under Elena Rossi: 0% genetic match to reported medical history. Mitochondrial DNA profile matches: Unregistered civilian, born Milan, Italy.

My knees felt weak. The world around me tilted on its axis.

For two months, I had mourned my wife with a grief so profound it had paralyzed my empire. I had hunted the rival families I believed were responsible for the hospital complications during childbirth. I had burned down warehouses, executed snitches, and plunged the East Coast into a shadow war, all to avenge a ghost.

Because the woman I married—the mother of my child—was an imposter.

And standing right in front of me, cradling my healthy, sleeping son, was the only person in this room who carried the exact genetic signature of the woman in the file.

“Clara,” I whispered, my voice thick with a terrifying mixture of rage and confusion. I holstered my gun, taking a slow step toward her. “Look at me.”

Clara flinched, pulling the edge of her grey uniform jacket over her chest as Leo finally drifted off into a deep, milk-drunk sleep. She looked up, her hazel eyes swimming with tears. “Please... I told you the truth. I just wanted to help him. If you’re going to kill me, just do it outside. Don't let the baby see.”

“I’m not going to kill you,” I said, my voice dangerously calm. I crouched down until I was eye-level with her. “Tell me the truth about who you are. And don't dare lie to me, because my patience ran out ten minutes ago.”

Clara’s lower lip trembled. She looked down at Leo’s peaceful face, stroked his dark hair with a surprisingly tender touch, and let out a long, shuddering sigh.

“My name is Clara Vance,” she whispered. “Isabella Vance was my twin sister.”

The name hit me like a physical blow.

“Isabella...” I choked out. “My wife’s name was Elena.”

“That was the name your enemies gave her when they sold her to your father’s syndicate as a bride,” Clara corrected softly, a bitter tear tracing down her cheek. “Our family—the Vance clan of Palermo—was destroyed by the Rossi family twenty years ago. Your father wiped us out. But when you were handed leadership, you wanted peace. You wanted a wife untainted by the mafia world. So your advisors—Marco and Dr. Vance—hired an agency in Milan to find a quiet, innocent florist’s daughter.”

She looked me straight in the eyes.

“They didn't find a florist, Mr. Rossi. They found Isabella. My sister. They wiped her memories of our family, gave her a fake identity, and placed her in your path so you would fall in love and anchor the Rossi empire in southern Italy.”

The horrifying puzzle pieces violently clicked into place.

The mysterious medical complications during childbirth. The sudden, unexplained death of my wife in a high-security private wing where only Dr. Vance and Marco had access.

They hadn't failed to save her.

They murdered her.

Because Isabella had started remembering her true past. She had discovered the truth about who engineered the destruction of the Vance family, and she had threatened to expose the traitors inside my own inner circle.

Before I could speak, the nursery door swung open violently.

Marco stood in the doorway, his Sig Sauer drawn and pointed directly at Clara’s head. But his eyes weren't looking at Clara. They were locked onto me, cold, dead, and entirely devoid of the loyalty he had sworn to me for fifteen years.

“I wouldn't listen to her fairy tales, Boss,” Marco said smoothly, his finger tightening on the trigger. “She’s delusional. And now that she’s contaminated the heir, she has to be terminated.”
