Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Doubt

Back at the hospital, the atmosphere was quiet, but the danger was far from over.

Sarah lay in her bed, her eyes red from crying. The news of her father and brother’s arrests had brought a sense of justice, but the emotional toll was immense. She had lost her entire birth family in a single night.

Daniel sat by her side, gently brushing a strand of hair from her face. "It's over, Sarah. They're both in jail. They can never hurt you again."

"But at what cost, Daniel?" Sarah whispered, her voice trembling. "Our baby... I'm still bleeding. The doctor says if the placenta detaches any further, they will have to perform an emergency C-section. He's only thirty weeks, Daniel. His lungs aren't fully developed. What if he doesn't make it?"

Daniel felt a heavy lump form in his throat. He had fought so hard to defeat their enemies, but the ultimate battle was out of his hands. It was up to Sarah’s body and the strength of their little boy.

"He's going to make it," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "Look at what he survived. He survived a fall down those stairs because you protected him. He’s a Thorne, Sarah. We don't break."

Suddenly, the heart monitor connected to Sarah’s belly began to beep rapidly. The steady rhythm became erratic, dropping dangerously low.

Dr. Aris rushed into the room, her face pale. She immediately checked the monitor and then looked at the ultrasound screen.

"The bleeding has increased," Dr. Aris said, her voice urgent but controlled. "The placenta is detaching further. We can't wait any longer. Sarah, we need to deliver this baby right now. Prep Operating Room 3!"

"No, no, it's too early!" Sarah panicked, clutching Daniel's hand with terrifying strength.

"We don't have a choice, Sarah. It’s the only way to save both of you," Dr. Aris said, as nurses began wheeling the bed out of the room.

Daniel ran alongside the gurney, his heart in his mouth. "I love you, Sarah! I'm right here! I'm not leaving you!"

"Daniel!" Sarah cried out as they reached the double doors of the operating room. "Please save our boy!"

The doors slammed shut, leaving Daniel standing alone in the cold, sterile hallway, his hands covered in his wife’s blood, praying for a miracle.
