Chapter 2 - The Emergency Room Lockout

The drive to St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was a blur of running red lights and Daniel desperately holding Sarah’s hand while steering with the other. Sarah’s face was ghostly white, her forehead slick with cold sweat. She clung to Daniel’s hand as if it were her only anchor to reality.
"Don't let him die, Daniel. Please, don't let our baby boy die," she sobbed, the physical pain in her back radiating into a tight, terrifying pressure in her abdomen.
"He's going to be fine, Sarah. You both are. I'm right here," Daniel promised, though his own heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
When they burst through the emergency room doors, the medical staff reacted instantly. Seeing a heavily pregnant woman in tears, clutching her back and stomach, a team of nurses rushed over with a gurney. Within seconds, Sarah was being wheeled into a private trauma bay, with Daniel hovering close by.
But the peace did not last.
Ten minutes into the initial assessment, the curtain to the trauma bay was violently pulled aside. Standing there was Dr. Charles Sterling, the chief of obstetrics and a man Daniel knew to be a close personal friend and golf partner of Arthur Vance. Behind him stood two burly hospital security guards.
"I need the husband to step out of the room immediately," Dr. Sterling said, his tone cold and bureaucratic, completely devoid of medical empathy.
Daniel stood his ground, his hand still gripping Sarah’s. "I'm not leaving my wife. She was assaulted. She needs a full ultrasound, and we need to check the baby’s heart rate."
"This is a private medical evaluation, and under hospital policy, we have the right to limit visitors in trauma situations to prevent interference with the staff," Dr. Sterling lied smoothly, his eyes darting briefly to the pocket where Daniel had placed Sarah’s phone. "Furthermore, we have received a report from Mr. Arthur Vance, a major donor to this hospital, stating that his daughter suffered a minor slip-and-fall due to your domestic negligence. We are obligated to investigate."
Sarah gasped in disbelief. "My husband didn't do this! It was Jason! My brother kicked me! Dr. Sterling, you know me, how can you say that?"
"Calm down, Sarah, you're hysterical," Sterling said, waving his hand to the security guards. "Escort the gentleman out. We will conduct the medical exam without any external... pressure."
Daniel realized instantly what was happening. Arthur’s reach was fast. He had already called in a favor to alter the medical narrative, hoping to paint Daniel as the abuser to invalidate the recording and protect Jason.
As the two security guards stepped forward, Daniel’s eyes darkened. He didn't flinch. Instead, he pulled out his own phone, which had been connected to the same secure cloud stream as Sarah's.
"Step back," Daniel said to the guards, his voice cutting through the room like a blade. "Dr. Sterling, I am currently broadcasting live to our legal counsel and over fifty thousand followers on my company's public platform. If your guards touch me, or if you delay my wife's emergency ultrasound by even one more second to protect Arthur Vance, it will not just be a lawsuit. It will be a live-streamed medical malpractice and obstruction of justice scandal that will destroy this hospital's reputation before sunrise."
The security guards paused, looking uneasily at each other and then at the glowing camera lens of Daniel's phone.

Dr. Sterling’s face went rigid. His calculated confidence began to crumble under the digital spotlight. "This is... highly irregular," he stammered.
"What's irregular is prioritizing a donor's cover-up over a beating heart," Daniel spat. "Now get the real trauma doctors in here, or I will wheel my wife out of this hospital myself and call the media from the parking lot."
