Chapter 5 - The Final Reckoning

Three months later.

The federal courthouse of the metropolitan district was crowded with reporters, but the mood inside Courtroom 4B was quiet, almost solemn. The trial of Veronica Drake had been swift, stripped of the usual corporate delays by the absolute mountain of digital and forensic evidence presented by the Vance legal team.

Veronica sat at the defense table, wearing a simple navy blue suit provided by her state-appointed legal counsel. Her father’s assets had been entirely frozen during the liquidation of Drake Pharmaceuticals, leaving them unable to afford the elite defense attorneys who had once protected their interests. She looked smaller, her previous confidence completely eroded by ninety days in a county detention facility.

On the other side of the room, Julian and Elena sat in the front row of the gallery. Elena was now in her ninth month, her radiance undeniable despite her advanced pregnancy, wrapped in a soft cream coat.

The judge, a stern woman with twenty years on the federal bench, adjusted her glasses as she looked down at the sentencing documents.

"Miss Drake," the judge began, her voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "Your defense has argued that your actions were the result of emotional distress and a momentary lack of judgment. However, the evidence presented—specifically the multi-angle thermal imagery and the documentation showing your previous attempts to illegally access the Vance corporate registry—paints a far more calculated picture."

The judge leaned forward, her expression dark. "You did not merely push a woman into a pool. You targeted a visibly pregnant individual with the clear intent to cause severe physical harm and emotional trauma, driven by a toxic combination of corporate entitlement and personal malice. The fact that the victims survived without permanent injury is due entirely to the quick actions of Mr. Vance, not any restraint on your part."

Veronica lowered her head, a silent tear escaping her eye, though whether it was out of genuine remorse or simply self-pity remained unclear.

"Therefore," the judge announced, striking her gavel with a sharp, definitive sound, "on the charge of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, this court sentences you to eight years at the Alderson Federal Correctional Institution, with no possibility of early parole for the first five years. Furthermore, a permanent, non-expiring protective order is issued against you and your direct relatives regarding the Vance family and all associated entities."

As the court marshals stepped forward to lead Veronica away, she paused, looking back toward the gallery one last time. Her eyes met Elena’s.

Elena didn't look away. She didn't gloat, she didn't smile. She simply looked at Veronica with a quiet, absolute peace—the look of a woman who had completely reclaimed her family's honor and secured her child's future.

Julian wrapped his arm around Elena’s shoulders, guiding her up from the bench as the courtroom began to empty. "Let’s go home, my love. We have a nursery to finish."
