Chapter 4 - The Recovery Wing

The private wing of the Vance Medical Center was bathed in a gentle, ambient light, designed to reduce stress for expectant mothers. The room was filled with fresh flowers, their sweet fragrance completely masking the typical clinical scent of the hospital.

Elena lay in the adjustable bed, her pale green hospital gown loose over her stomach. A specialized fetal monitor patch was secured to her skin, its small blue light blinking in perfect synchronization with the rhythmic, steady thumping sound of the baby’s heartbeat echoing from the speaker beside her.

Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.

Julian sat in the armchair right beside the bed, his jacket discarded, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows. He had his eyes closed, his forehead resting against the edge of Elena’s mattress, his hand tightly holding hers. He hadn't slept in thirty-six hours, since the moment he dove into the pool.

Elena reached out with her free hand, gently running her fingers through his damp hair. "Julian. Look at me."

He lifted his head slowly. His dark eyes were bloodshot, lined with a profound, raw exhaustion that he rarely allowed the world to see. "The doctors said the next twenty-four hours are critical for observation. Any sign of early contractions—"

"The baby is fine," Elena said softly, her thumb rubbing the back of his hand. "Listen to the monitor. He’s strong, Julian. He’s a Vance. A little bit of pool water isn't going to stop him."

Julian let out a long, ragged breath, leaning forward to press his forehead against her hand. "When I saw you disappear under the water... I felt everything we built, everything I care about, completely vanish. I didn't care about the patents, the takeover, the villa. I just realized how close I came to losing my entire world because I let my guard down around those people."

"You didn't let your guard down," Elena said, her voice firm. "We knew Veronica was desperate. We just didn't realize she was malicious enough to strike in front of a hundred witnesses. But her arrogance was her undoing. Clarissa called me while you were at the police station. The Drake Corporation filed for Chapter 11 restructuring this morning. The board has formally ousted Victor."

"Good," Julian whispered, his expression hardening for a brief moment before softening as he looked back at her. "Let them piece together whatever fragments are left. I’ve handed over all management duties to my executive team for the next three months. I’m not leaving this hospital until you and our son come home with me."

The door to the room opened quietly, and Dr. Sarah Jenkins, the lead obstetrician, walked in carrying a digital chart. She smiled warmly at the couple.

"Well, the latest ultrasound looks absolutely perfect, Elena," Dr. Jenkins announced, showing them the clear, high-resolution image of the baby curled safely within the womb. "The amniotic fluid levels are completely normal, and there’s no sign of placental detachment from the impact. You had a very lucky escape, thanks to the quick response and that specialized linen dress fabric that didn't absorb water too quickly."

Julian looked at the screen, a genuine, emotional smile finally breaking through his exhaustion. He reached out, his large palm resting gently over Elena’s belly, feeling the distinct, small movement of their child against his skin.

"Thank you, Doctor," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion.

"You’re very welcome," Dr. Jenkins smiled, adjusting the monitor volume slightly. "Get some rest, both of you. You’ve earned it."
