Chapter 3 - The Corporate Collapse

The transformation of the luxury villa from a playground for the elite to a dynamic crime scene was absolute. Within an hour, the party guests had been systematically escorted out by Vance security operators, their contact information logged for future witness statements. The grand catering tables remained laden with untouched food, the ice sculptures melting under the warm night air.
Inside the villaās vast, high-ceilinged living room, Victor Drake sat on a leather sofa, his head buried in his hands. His phone was buzzing continuously against the glass coffee table, displaying alerts from the financial markets. The pre-market trading for Drake Pharmaceuticals was already showing a catastrophic thirty percent drop following the leaked rumors of the assault and the sudden, massive block trades executed by Vance Holdings.
Veronica stood near the window, her hands clasped tightly together, watching two uniform police officers speak with Detective Miller on the terrace.
"Father, do something!" Veronica hissed, her voice panicked. "They can't arrest me based on a video! My lawyers can argue that it was an involuntary muscle spasm! We can say I tripped!"
"Shut up, Veronica!" Victor roared, suddenly snapping, his voice shaking with a mixture of terror and fury. He stood up, pacing the room. "You stupid, arrogant girl! You didn't just push a womanāyou gave them the legal trigger theyāve been waiting for! Do you know what Vance Holdings did tonight? They didn't just buy our debt. They presented the federal regulatory board with evidence of our clinical trial manipulation from five years ago. The patents Elenaās father owned? They have proof we altered the filing dates!"
The doors to the living room opened, and Julian walked in. He had changed into a dry charcoal suit, his hair damp but neatly combed. He looked every bit the ruthless titan of industry he was built to be. Beside him was Clarissa Sterling, holding a tablet displaying real-time financial data.
"Julian," Victor said, his tone immediately shifting from rage to desperate pleading. "Please. Weāve known each otherās families for twenty years. Surely we can settle this outside of the public eye. If itās about the patents, we will sign them over completely. We will pay a full settlement to Elena. Just call off the hostile takeover. If the stock drops any further, the company will go into liquidation."
Julian walked over to the fireplace, leaning his arm against the marble mantelpiece. He didn't look at Victor; his gaze was fixed on the flickering embers of the gas fire.
"Ten years ago, Victor," Julian said softly, "Elena's father sat in your office. He begged you not to steal his life's work. He told you his wife was sick, that they needed the medical benefits from the patent realization to pay for her cancer treatments. Do you remember what you told him?"
Victorās mouth opened, but no sound came out. His face turned a deep, guilty shade of purple.
"You told him that the market doesn't care about tears," Julian continued, his voice dropping an octave, becoming colder than the stone beneath their feet. "You told him that the weak are meant to be stepped on by the strong. Well, Victor... the market has spoken tonight. And it turns out, you are the weak one."
Detective Miller stepped into the room, his expression grim as he looked at Veronica. "Miss Drake, I need you to step forward and place your hands behind your back. You are being placed under arrest for attempted aggravated assault resulting in the reckless endangerment of an unborn child."
"No!" Veronica shrieked, backing away toward the window. "Father, help me! Julian, please! I did it because I love you! You were supposed to marry me! She took you away from me!"
May you like
"I was never yours, Veronica," Julian said, his eyes finally locking onto hers with a look of pure, unadulterated disgust. "And where you're going, youāll have plenty of time to realize that the world doesn't revolve around the Drake name anymore."
The handcuffs clicked into place, the sharp metallic sound signaling the absolute end of the Drake dynasty.
