Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Century

The federal courthouse downtown was besieged by media vans and flashing cameras for the next three months as the Sterling trial dominated the headlines. The public was transfixed by the sheer level of drama—the wealthy, aristocratic family exposed as a nest of murderers and embezzlers, brought down by a brilliant, pregnant widow.
Inside the courtroom, the contrast between the two sides was stark.
On the defense side sat Julian and Chloe Sterling. Stripped of their luxury clothes, wearing standard orange inmate jumpsuits, they looked defeated and haggard. Chloe’s beautiful blonde hair was unkempt, her eyes hollow, her face perpetually twisted in a mixture of anger and disbelief. Julian looked broken, the realization that he would spend the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary having finally shattered his arrogant posture.
On the prosecution side sat Elena Vance, with Maya sitting calmly in the front row of the gallery, her belly now prominently round as she neared her due date. Beside her sat Lucas, a constant, unyielding pillar of support.
The turning point of the trial came when the prosecution played the oil painting surveillance footage on the courtroom's large displays. The defense had tried to argue that Maya had orchestrated the entire event, but seeing the raw, unedited violence of Chloe’s assault caused a collective gasp to ripple through the jury box.
Elena Vance stood before the jury during her closing argument, her voice ringing with absolute clarity.
"This is not a case about family drama, ladies and gentlemen," Elena said, pointing a definitive finger at Julian and Chloe. "This is a case about absolute corporate greed. Julian Sterling murdered his own son to protect his stolen fortune. And when he realized his son’s widow was intelligent enough to uncover his crimes, he sent his daughter to execute her and her unborn child on the stairs of their own home. They believed their wealth made them gods. They believed the law could be bought. But tonight, the law demands accountability."
The jury deliberated for less than three hours.
When the foreperson stood to read the verdicts, the courtroom was so quiet you could hear the ticking of the wall clock.
"On the count of conspiracy to commit corporate espionage: Guilty. On the count of grand theft of intellectual property and embezzlement: Guilty. On the count of first-degree murder in the death of Arthur Sterling... we find the defendant, Julian Sterling, Guilty."
Chloe burst into frantic, ugly tears as the word "Guilty" was repeated for her own charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault. She turned toward Maya, screaming obscenities before court marshals violently forced her back down into her seat.
"You witch! You took everything from us! You planned this!" Chloe shrieked as she was led away in chains.
Maya didn't flinch. She stood up slowly, her hand resting on her stomach, looking at the ruined remnants of the people who had terrorized her family. She felt no hatred, no desire for revenge. Only a profound, deep-seated sense of justice finally fulfilled.

As the courtroom cleared, Lucas turned to her, pulling her into a warm, tight embrace. "It’s over, Maya. It’s finally over."
"Yes," Maya whispered, tears of relief finally filling her eyes as she leaned against his chest. "We can finally go home."
