Chapter 4 - The Hospital Confrontation

The VIP maternity wing of St. Jude’s Research Hospital was under complete federal lockdown. Two armed guards stood outside the doors of Suite 302, their expressions stern, refusing entry to anyone without a federal prosecutor's clearance badge.
Inside the room, the environment was peaceful, bathed in the soft, warm light of the setting sun. Maya sat upright in the hospital bed, a tray of food untouched beside her. She wore a standard hospital gown, but the specialized impact gear had been removed, leaving only a few minor bruises on her shoulder from where she had intentionally guided her fall down the steps.
Beside her, holding her hand with a fierce, protective grip, was Lucas Sterling. Lucas was Arthur’s younger brother—the black sheep of the family who had vanished five years ago after refusing to participate in his father Julian’s corrupt schemes. For years, the media had painted Lucas as a reckless rebel, but Maya knew the truth. Lucas had been her silent partner, the man who had gathered the off-site server data while she operated within the lion's den of the Sterling mansion.
"You shouldn't have done it, Maya," Lucas whispered, his voice thick with emotion as he rubbed his thumb over her knuckles. "When Ruiz called me and said you actually let Chloe push you... my heart stopped. If that padding had failed, if you had hit your head—"
"It didn't fail, Lucas," Maya said gently, her voice soft but filled with an unyielding strength. "We needed a definitive, violent act captured on camera that Julian couldn't buy his way out of. If we only brought the financial crimes to light, Julian’s legal team would have tied it up in appellate courts for the next ten years. He would have remained free on bail, dangerous and desperate. I needed Chloe to strike, because I knew her arrogance would make her sloppy. Now, neither of them can ever touch us again."
The door to the suite opened, and Detective Ruiz walked in, carrying a folder of documents. His expression was tired but triumphant.
"It’s official," Ruiz said, pulling up a chair beside the bed. "Julian Sterling has been denied bail. The evidence regarding Arthur’s medication tampering was so overwhelming that the judge categorized him as an extreme danger to the community. Chloe is currently being held in the women's detention center. Her lawyers tried to argue that she was provoked, but the video footage completely destroyed that defense. She’s looking at a minimum of twenty years for attempted murder."
Maya let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension that had held her body rigid for the last six months finally melting away. "And the trust? The company?"
"The board held an emergency session an hour ago," Ruiz replied, handing a document to Lucas. "They have formally stripped Julian of all executive titles. By the terms of Arthur’s original will, which Julian tried so hard to suppress, full controlling interest of the Sterling Group devolves entirely to you, Maya, as the trustee for Arthur’s unborn heir. And as the co-trustee named in the document... Lucas, you are officially the new acting CEO."
Lucas looked down at the paperwork, a bitter-sweet smile on his face. "Arthur built that company to fund renewable infrastructure and children's hospitals. Our father turned it into a laundry machine for stolen wealth. It’s time to clean the house."

He looked up at Maya, his eyes shining with a deep, profound respect that went far beyond their shared mission. "But first, we make sure this little guy arrives safely." He placed his large hand gently over Maya’s stomach. As if responding to his voice, the baby gave a strong, definitive kick against his palm.
Maya laughed, a genuine, beautiful sound that hadn't been heard within the walls of the Sterling estate for a very long time. "He’s a fighter, Lucas. Just like his father was."
