Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the Law

The silence of the estate was violently shattered less than two minutes later by the high-pitched shriek of police cruisers tearing up the long, gravel driveway. The flashing red and blue lights cast strobing shadows across the stained-glass windows of the foyer, illuminating the grand staircase in a chaotic display of color.
Mrs. Higgins gasped, looking up from where she was still rubbing Chloe’s back. "The police? Who called the police?"
Chloe froze, her theatrical sobbing stopping instantly. A sudden, sharp prickle of unease washed over her. She wiped her eyes rapidly, standing up and smoothing down her skirt. "It must be a mistake. Or perhaps a neighbor heard the shouting. Don't worry, Mrs. Higgins, I will handle them. I'll tell them Maya had a psychiatric episode and fell."
Before Chloe could even take a step down the stairs, the massive oak front doors of the mansion were thrown open. A squad of uniform officers poured into the foyer, followed closely by Detective Marcus Ruiz, a tall man in a sharp charcoal trench coat, his eyes scanning the scene with clinical precision. Behind him walked a team of paramedics carrying a trauma stretcher and a specialized neonatal medical kit.
"Nobody move," Ruiz announced, his voice booming through the hall, carrying the absolute weight of federal authority. "This is a secure crime scene."
"Detective!" Chloe cried out, instantly slipping back into her vulnerable heiress persona. She ran down the remaining steps, her hands extended as if seeking protection. "Thank goodness you're here! It's my brother's widow, Maya. She's completely lost her mind. She attacked me on the landing, shouting terrible things about my father's business practices, and then she threw herself down the stairs to try and blame me! Please, you have to arrest her for assault, she's dangerous!"
Detective Ruiz didn't look at Chloe. He walked right past her, his heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the floor, and marched straight up the stairs to the landing where Maya lay.
The paramedics swarmed around Maya, their hands moving with efficient speed. The lead paramedic, a woman named Sarah who had been briefed on the operation hours prior, immediately checked Maya's vitals while subtly verifying the integrity of the specialized, medical-grade gel impact padding concealed beneath Maya's custom-tailored dress.
"Fetal heart rate is strong and stable at 145 beats per minute," Sarah called out loudly for the room to hear. "Maternal pulse is elevated but within safe parameters. No signs of placental abruption or immediate orthopedic trauma, but we need to transport her to the hospital for full diagnostic imaging."
Maya let out a weak groan, playing her part to perfection as she looked up at Ruiz. "She pushed me, Detective. She said I ruined her life... and then she shoved me."
"That is a lie!" Chloe shrieked from the bottom of the stairs, her voice cracking with a mixture of rage and growing panic. "Mrs. Higgins saw it! Tell him, Mrs. Higgins! Tell him she’s lying!"
The elderly caretaker looked conflicted, her hands trembling. "I... I only arrived after the fall, Detective. I heard the shouting, and when I got here, Miss Chloe was in tears, and young Maya was on the floor. I didn't see the actual push."
Ruiz turned around on the stairs, leaning his hands on the wooden railing as he looked down at Chloe. "Well, Miss Sterling, it seems we have a classic case of 'she said, she said.' You claim she jumped to frame you. She claims you pushed her to eliminate her and the unborn heir to the Sterling estate."
"And who are the police going to believe?" Chloe sneered, a flash of her family's trademark arrogance breaking through her tears. "A prominent member of the Sterling family, or a woman who married into our fortune less than two years ago? My father is the CFO of this city’s largest financial institution. We own the political capital here, Detective."
"I don't care about your political capital, Miss Sterling," Ruiz said smoothly, pulling a sleek, encrypted tablet from his trench coat pocket. "I care about metadata. And I care about high-definition optical sensors."
He tapped the screen of the tablet. Instantly, the massive digital smart-home display integrated into the foyer wall flickered, overriding the estate's standard security controls.
Chloe’s heart plummeted into her stomach.
On the screen, a crystal-clear, multi-angle video playback began. It wasn't from the standard wall cameras, which Julian Sterling had personally deactivated earlier that morning to ensure there would be no record of Chloe’s confrontation with Maya. This footage was from a tiny, pinhole lens hidden inside the eye of a centuries-old oil painting portrait of Arthur Sterling that hung directly opposite the staircase landing—a camera Maya had personally installed forty-eight hours ago.
The video showed everything. It showed Maya standing calmly, her hands on her belly, making no aggressive movements whatsoever. It showed Chloe’s face distorted in pure rage, her arms extending, and the violent, definitive force of her hands slamming into Maya’s shoulders, sending the pregnant woman cascading down the wooden steps.
The audio was horrifyingly clear. "You ruined my life!" Chloe’s recorded voice roared through the foyer.

Chloe backed away until her spine hit the heavy oak front door, her face completely drained of color. "No... no, that's impossible. The security network was shut down. My father turned it off!"
"Your father turned off the house network, Miss Sterling," Ruiz said, descending the stairs slowly, his eyes locked onto her like a predator cornering its prey. "But he didn't turn off the independent, cellular-linked federal surveillance feed that Mrs. Maya Sterling has been operating under our authorization for the last month. What you just committed isn't just a domestic dispute. It’s the attempted murder of a federal witness."
