Chapter 2 - An Unscheduled Visit

At 8:00 AM the following morning, Sarah Martinez stood in front of a modest two-bedroom apartment in a worn-out building on the East Side. She was exhausted after an eleven-hour shift, her body aching, her mind consumed by the looming hospital bill for her mother's experimental chemotherapy.
As she unlocked her door, she heard the sweet sound of her daughters laughing inside. She stepped in, kicking off her worn sneakers, and was greeted by Lily, who ran up to wrap her small arms around Sarah's waist.
"Mommy! You're home!" Lily beamed. "Guess what? A man called yesterday from the clouds!"
Sarah froze, brushing a stray curl from Lily’s forehead. "From where, sweetie?"
"From work! He asked for you, but I told him you were getting Abuela's medicine. He was really nice, Mommy. He promised to pray for Abuela!"
Sarah’s blood ran cold. A call from work? She knew the rumors circulating among the cleaning crew—the company was downsizing, and corporate HR was reviewing files. If management knew a child had answered her personal phone and spoken about her family struggles, they might view it as unprofessional or a liability.
Before Sarah could ask Lily more questions, a firm, polite knock sounded at the apartment door.
Sarah nervously smoothed down her shirt and opened the door. Standing in the dim hallway was a tall, strikingly handsome man in a bespoke charcoal suit. He carried a large leather briefcase in one hand and a wrapped baker's box in the other.
"Sarah Martinez?" the man asked softly.
"Yes?" Sarah replied guardedly, stepping slightly in front of her daughter. "Can I help you?"
"My name is Marcus Thompson," he said.
Sarah’s eyes widened in sheer panic. She recognized the name immediately from the corporate newsletters and the plaque in the main lobby. The CEO of Thompson Industries was standing on her doorstep.
"Mr. Thompson!" Sarah stammered, her voice shaking. "I... I am so sorry if my daughter said anything out of line yesterday! Please, she's only six, she didn't mean to bother you—"
"Mommy! That's him!" Lily interrupted, peering out from behind Sarah's skirt with a bright smile. "That's the man from the clouds!"

Marcus looked down at Lily, his expression softening into a warm, genuine smile that transformed his stern features. He knelt down on the dusty hallway floor, completely unbothered by what it might do to his custom suit.
"Hello, Lily," Marcus said gently, holding out the bakery box. "I brought some fresh chocolate chip cookies. I heard your Abuela makes the best ones, so I hoped these might hold you over until she's back in the kitchen."
