Chapter 4 — The Foundation Behind the Spotlight

Chapter 4 — The Foundation Behind the Spotlight
The lights went out all at once.
The garden, moments ago glowing with soft lanterns, was swallowed by darkness.
Only the distant headlights from the three black SUVs beyond the gates cut through the night.
Then came the alarms.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
Every security sensor around Emma Laurent's Malibu estate activated simultaneously.
Daniel Ross instinctively stepped in front of Emma, Sarah, and Lily.
"Everyone stay behind me."
His hand moved to the radio clipped to his shoulder.
"Power failure. Lockdown Protocol Seven."
Static answered.
Nothing else.
He frowned.
"They're jamming our communications."
Emma tightened her grip around Lily's hand.
Sarah's breathing grew uneven.
"No..."
"They're here."
Emma looked at her older sister.
"Who are 'they'?"
Sarah stared at the approaching headlights.
"The Foundation."
Within seconds, emergency generators hummed to life.
Dim security lights illuminated the estate.
The gates remained closed.
Outside, three SUVs stood perfectly still.
No engines revving.
No shouting.
Just silence.
The first vehicle's door slowly opened.
An elderly man stepped out wearing a dark tailored suit.
Silver hair.
Perfect posture.
A walking cane carved from polished ebony.
He looked more like a respected university professor than someone arriving with a convoy in the middle of the night.
He stopped a few feet outside the gate.
Then removed his hat politely.
"My name is Jonathan Vale."
His voice carried across the garden.
"I've come to speak with Sarah Laurent."
Daniel answered firmly.
"You can speak through the gate."
Jonathan nodded.
"Fair enough."
He smiled kindly.
"I assure you, Miss Laurent..."
"If I wanted violence..."
"...we wouldn't be having this conversation."
Sarah whispered,
"Don't believe him."
Emma noticed her sister trembling.
Not with anger.
With fear.
Real fear.
Jonathan folded his hands over the top of his cane.
"For fifteen years..."
"We've searched for you."
Sarah stepped backward.
"You murdered innocent people."
The old man's expression saddened.
"No."
"We prevented something much worse."
Emma interrupted.
"I think it's time someone explained exactly what 'The Foundation' is."
Jonathan looked at her for a long moment.
Then quietly replied,
"The Foundation doesn't produce movies."
"It produces influence."
He looked toward the distant Hollywood skyline.
"For decades..."
"The entertainment industry has been shaped by people the public has never heard of."
"Studio executives."
"Billionaires."
"Political donors."
"Technology investors."
"We simply ensure that money supporting children's hospitals, educational grants, and humanitarian projects reaches its destination."
Sarah laughed bitterly.
"No."
"You used charities to hide stolen money."
Jonathan sighed.
"Some members did."
"But not all."
Emma frowned.
"So Victor Ashcroft..."
Jonathan's eyes hardened.
"Victor betrayed us."
Silence.
"He turned a charitable organization into his personal criminal empire."
"He stole donations."
"He created shell companies."
"He bribed officials."
"And when Sarah discovered it..."
Jonathan looked toward Sarah with genuine regret.
"...he convinced everyone she had disappeared."
Emma's heartbeat quickened.
"So Victor wasn't running the Foundation."
"No."
"He hijacked part of it."
Daniel glanced toward Emma.
"That explains why the financial records were so inconsistent."
Jonathan nodded.
"Exactly."
Sarah stepped closer to the gate.
"If that's true..."
"Why didn't you help me?"
The old man's shoulders lowered.
"Because we couldn't find you."
Sarah stared at him.
"What?"
"Victor controlled every report."
"He told us you'd stolen the evidence."
"He claimed you'd vanished with millions."
Emma slowly looked toward her sister.
"They believed you were the criminal."
Sarah closed her eyes.
"For fifteen years..."
Jonathan nodded sadly.
"Until yesterday."
"What changed?"
Jonathan looked directly at Emma.
"You."
The actress frowned.
"My red-carpet interview reached someone inside our board."
"They recognized Lily's bracelet."
"They reopened the original investigation."
"And within hours..."
"...Victor's lies began collapsing."
Before anyone could respond...
Another convoy arrived.
This time, police vehicles.
Federal investigators.
Financial Crimes Division.
News helicopters filled the sky overhead.
Detectives hurried toward the gate.
One of them approached Daniel.
"We have warrants."
Emma stepped forward.
"For Victor?"
The detective nodded.
"And seventeen others."
Jonathan quietly removed a folder from his briefcase.
"These belong to Sarah."
Inside were original corporate records.
Foundation bylaws.
Meeting minutes.
Financial audits.
Every document proving Victor had manipulated the organization for years.
Sarah stared.
"You kept these?"
Jonathan smiled gently.
"I spent fifteen years hoping I'd someday be able to return them."
Just then...
Daniel's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
His face changed.
"What happened?"
Emma asked.
Daniel swallowed.
"Victor's private jet."
"What about it?"
"It just requested emergency clearance."
Sarah looked toward the sky.
"He's running."
Daniel nodded.
"Our agents are already heading to the airport."
Emma looked at Sarah.
"It'll be over soon."
Sarah didn't answer.
Instead...
She slowly reached into the pocket of her coat.
She removed an old silver locket.
Emma recognized it instantly.
Their mother's.
"I've carried this every day."
Sarah whispered.
"I wanted to give it back myself."
Emma carefully opened the locket.
Inside were two tiny photographs.
One of them showed Emma and Sarah as children.
The other...
Made Emma freeze.
It wasn't a photograph.
It was a folded piece of paper.
She unfolded it carefully.
A birth certificate.
But not Lily's.
The name across the top read:
Emily Grace Ashcroft.
Date of Birth...
Twenty-six years earlier.
Mother:
Margaret Ashcroft.
Father:
Victor Ashcroft.
Emma frowned.
"What does this have to do with us?"
Sarah smiled through tears.
"Look again."
Emma read the final line.
Child legally adopted by Robert and Helen Laurent.
Her hands began shaking.
"No..."
Sarah nodded.
"I found the truth years ago."
Emma looked up, speechless.
Sarah took both of her hands.
"You were never just my little sister."
"You were the baby I promised to protect."
Emma's knees weakened.
"What are you saying?"
Tears streamed down Sarah's face.
"You were adopted."
The world seemed to stop.
Sarah gently brushed a tear from Emma's cheek.
"Victor Ashcroft..."
She paused.
"...is your biological father."
Silence.
Complete silence.
Even the helicopters overhead seemed impossibly distant.
Emma stared at the birth certificate.
Then at Sarah.
Then at Jonathan.
Finally...
She whispered,
"My whole life..."
"...was built on a lie."
Jonathan stepped forward.
"No."
He spoke with quiet conviction.
"Your beginning was hidden."
"But your life..."
He looked toward Lily, who had fallen asleep peacefully in Mrs. Brooks' arms.
"...was built by the people who chose to love you."
Emma slowly closed the locket.
She looked toward the eastern horizon.
The first light of sunrise stretched across the ocean.
A new day was beginning.
But before she could decide what to do with the truth...
Daniel's radio crackled back to life.
His face hardened as he listened.
He looked toward Emma.
"They caught Victor."
A wave of relief swept through the garden.
Then Daniel continued.
"But..."
"He says he'll only speak..."
"...to his daughter."
Every eye turned toward Emma.
For the first time in her life...
She knew exactly what those words meant.
And before justice could finally be served...
She would have to face the man who had destroyed her family.
May you like
Her biological father.
To Be Continued...
