Chapter 3 — The Truth Hidden in Box 317

Chapter 3 — The Truth Hidden in Box 317
The living room fell into stunned silence.
Victor Ashcroft's face remained on every television screen.
His carefully rehearsed expression conveyed concern.
His voice sounded warm.
Almost fatherly.
"If anyone has information regarding my granddaughter's whereabouts," he said to the reporters, "I ask you to contact my office immediately. Our only concern is her safety."
Emma picked up the remote and switched the television off.
The silence that followed felt even louder.
Mrs. Brooks spoke first.
"He's lying."
Emma nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"But the question is..."
"...why?"
She looked toward Lily.
The little girl was sitting cross-legged on the rug, hugging her old stuffed rabbit.
Completely unaware that one of Hollywood's most powerful producers had just claimed to be her grandfather before millions of viewers.
Emma knelt beside her.
"Lily..."
"Has your mom ever mentioned someone named Victor?"
The child frowned.
She thought carefully.
Then slowly shook her head.
"No."
"What about your father?"
Another small shake of the head.
"I never met him."
"Did your mom ever talk about him?"
Lily looked down.
"Only once."
Emma waited.
The little girl whispered,
"She said..."
"...some people are born into families."
"...and some people have to find them."
Emma felt her heart tighten.
Sarah had protected her daughter from something.
Or someone.
An hour later...
Emma, Mrs. Brooks, and her head of security, Daniel Ross, sat around the dining room table.
In the center lay the tiny brass key.
Safety Deposit Box 317.
No bank name.
No logo.
Nothing.
Daniel unfolded a city map.
"There are more than forty banks in Los Angeles with safety deposit services."
Emma sighed.
"We don't have time to search all of them."
Mrs. Brooks quietly lifted the key.
"Look."
On the back...
Barely visible beneath years of wear...
Were two engraved letters.
CB
Daniel's eyes widened.
"Coastal Bank."
Emma immediately stood.
"The downtown branch."
"It was the only Coastal Bank that offered numbered private vaults fifteen years ago."
Daniel checked his watch.
"If we leave now..."
"...we'll make it before closing."
Within thirty minutes...
A convoy of security vehicles arrived at the historic Coastal Bank building.
The branch manager personally greeted Emma.
She recognized the actress immediately.
"Ms. Laurent."
"I'm sorry for the circumstances."
Emma held up the brass key.
"I need access to Box 317."
The manager examined it carefully.
Her expression changed.
"I've never seen one of these."
"What do you mean?"
"This style of key hasn't been used in almost twenty years."
She led them downstairs.
Past rows of reinforced steel vaults.
Finally...
They stopped before a small metal door.
317
The manager inserted her master key.
Emma inserted Sarah's key.
The lock clicked.
The box slid open.
Inside rested only three items.
A leather journal.
A flash drive.
And an old Polaroid photograph.
Emma picked up the photograph first.
Her breath caught.
It showed Sarah standing beside a younger Victor Ashcroft.
Both were smiling.
Victor had one arm around Sarah's shoulder.
Written across the bottom in blue ink were the words:
"The day we promised to change Hollywood."
Emma stared.
"Sarah knew Victor."
Mrs. Brooks looked shocked.
"Not just knew him."
"They were close."
Emma opened the journal.
The first pages were ordinary.
Audition notes.
Coffee shop receipts.
Ideas for short films.
Then everything changed.
A later entry was written in hurried handwriting.
"Victor asked me to help manage financial records for Silver Horizon."
"I thought I was joining a film studio."
"Instead..."
"I found accounts that didn't make sense."
Emma turned the page.
"Millions of dollars moving through fake charities."
"Payments to shell companies."
"Children's foundations that didn't exist."
Daniel looked up sharply.
"Money laundering."
Emma continued reading.
"When I confronted Victor..."
"He smiled."
"He said nobody would believe an assistant over Hollywood royalty."
The next page was stained with tears.
"I copied everything."
"If anything happens to me..."
"The evidence survives."
Emma slowly reached for the flash drive.
Daniel connected it to his encrypted laptop.
Folders appeared.
Tax documents.
Emails.
Corporate transfers.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Thousands of files.
Enough evidence to expose decades of financial crimes.
Then one video caught Emma's attention.
Its title simply read:
WATCH FIRST
She clicked.
The recording began inside an office.
Victor Ashcroft sat behind his desk.
Across from him...
Sarah.
"You should destroy those files," Victor said calmly.
Sarah shook her head.
"No."
"They belong to the authorities."
Victor smiled.
"You've always been too honest."
"I'm not afraid of you."
His smile disappeared.
"You should be."
The video ended abruptly.
The room became silent.
Emma looked at Daniel.
"This is enough to destroy him."
Daniel nodded.
"If it's authentic."
"It is."
Everyone turned.
Lily stood quietly near the doorway.
She had wandered into the room unnoticed.
She looked at the frozen image of Victor on the laptop screen.
"I know him."
Emma knelt.
"You do?"
"He came to our apartment."
"When?"
"Last year."
"What happened?"
Lily hugged her rabbit tighter.
"He wanted Mommy to sign papers."
"What papers?"
"I don't know."
"But Mommy said..."
"...'I'd rather disappear forever than help you hurt another child.'"
Emma's heart skipped a beat.
Another child?
What did that mean?
Before anyone could ask another question...
Daniel's phone vibrated.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
"Repeat that."
Silence.
Then...
"We're on our way."
Emma stood.
"What happened?"
"Our security team just intercepted someone trying to enter your guesthouse."
"Who?"
Daniel swallowed.
"A woman."
"Is she armed?"
"No."
"Then why the emergency?"
He looked directly at Emma.
"Because she keeps repeating one sentence."
"What sentence?"
Daniel's voice softened.
"She says..."
"'Tell Emma I'm sorry I was late.'"
Emma felt the air leave her lungs.
"No..."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"She gave only one name."
The room held its breath.
"Sarah."
Emma's knees nearly gave way.
Fifteen years after vanishing without a trace...
Her sister had just appeared outside her home.
Alive.
Emma ran.
Daniel and the security team followed close behind.
She burst through the back doors into the moonlit garden.
Near the guesthouse stood a woman in a worn gray coat.
Her hair had turned streaked with silver.
She looked thinner.
Older.
Exhausted.
But when she smiled...
Emma recognized her instantly.
"Sarah..."
The woman looked at her little sister.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"I promised I'd come back."
Emma ran across the lawn.
The sisters embraced tightly, both overcome with emotion.
For a long moment, neither of them could speak.
Then a tiny voice came from behind Emma.
"Mommy?"
Sarah slowly looked up.
Lily stood only a few feet away.
For one heartbeat, Sarah simply stared.
Then she dropped to her knees.
"My sunshine..."
Lily burst into tears and threw herself into her mother's arms.
The three of them held each other beneath the garden lights while everyone around them quietly looked away.
It should have been the end of the nightmare.
It should have been the beginning of healing.
But Sarah's smile faded as she looked over Emma's shoulder.
Toward the dark street beyond the gates.
Three black SUVs had stopped outside the property.
Their headlights remained on.
The engines never shut off.
Sarah's face turned pale.
"They found me."
Emma followed her gaze.
"Who?"
Sarah whispered only two words.
"The Foundation."
Before anyone could ask what she meant...
Every light in the mansion suddenly went out.
The entire property was plunged into darkness.
Then...
One by one...
May you like
The security alarms began to sound.
