Chapter 2 — The Child Nobody Was Supposed to Find
Police sirens echoed through the streets surrounding the Silver Star Film Awards.
The three men disappeared into the crowd before officers reached the entrance.
Within minutes, security locked down the entire red carpet.
Reporters abandoned celebrity interviews and rushed toward the unfolding scene.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Every entertainment channel interrupted its live coverage.
BREAKING NEWS
Oscar winner Emma Laurent leaves the red carpet after protecting an unidentified child from suspicious men posing as government officials.
Social media exploded.
Millions of viewers replayed the moment Emma stepped in front of the frightened little girl.
No one knew who Lily was.
But the world had just watched Hollywood's biggest actress choose one terrified child over the most important night of her career.
Emma sat quietly in the back of a black SUV.
Across from her, Lily clutched the faded backpack tightly against her chest.
She hadn't spoken since leaving the red carpet.
Emma removed her high heels and gently wrapped a warm blanket around the little girl.
"You must be cold."
Lily whispered,
"I'm okay."
"No."
Emma smiled softly.
"You've spent too much time pretending you're okay."
The child looked down.
"My mom says brave people still get cold."
Emma felt tears gathering again.
"Your mom sounds very wise."
Lily smiled for the first time.
"She is."
Twenty minutes later...
The SUV entered the private gates of Emma's Malibu home.
Unlike the enormous celebrity mansions often featured in magazines, the property felt peaceful.
Old oak trees.
A flower garden.
A small guesthouse near the beach.
It looked less like a movie star's estate and more like a family home that had been waiting for laughter.
As the front door opened, Emma's longtime housekeeper, Mrs. Evelyn Brooks, hurried into the foyer.
She stopped the moment she saw Lily.
Then...
Her eyes widened.
"Oh..."
She whispered.
"My goodness."
Emma frowned.
"What?"
Mrs. Brooks looked carefully at the little girl's face.
Then tears filled her eyes.
"She looks exactly like Sarah."
Emma couldn't answer.
Because it was true.
The same gentle smile.
The same hazel eyes.
The same tiny dimple that appeared whenever she tried not to laugh.
For a moment...
It felt as though fifteen years had disappeared.
After a warm bath and a homemade dinner, Lily slowly began relaxing.
She ate quietly.
Almost too quietly.
Emma noticed something that broke her heart.
Every few bites...
The little girl slipped pieces of bread into her backpack.
Emma pretended not to notice.
Until dessert.
Lily wrapped half her cookie inside a napkin.
Emma gently asked,
"Saving it?"
Lily froze.
"I'm sorry."
"You don't have to apologize."
The little girl stared at the table.
"My mom always said..."
"...keep food for tomorrow."
Emma reached across the table and held her tiny hand.
"You won't need to do that here."
Lily looked uncertain.
"What if we run out?"
"We won't."
"What if I have to leave?"
Emma smiled.
"You don't."
The child blinked.
"I don't?"
"No."
"As long as you want..."
"...you're safe."
Lily quietly leaned against Emma's shoulder.
For the first time in a very long while...
She allowed herself to believe an adult's promise.
Later that night...
Emma helped Lily unpack the worn backpack.
Inside were only a few clothes.
A coloring book.
A stuffed rabbit with one missing ear.
And an old metal lunchbox.
Lily immediately grabbed it.
"No."
Emma smiled.
"I won't open it without asking."
The little girl hesitated.
"My mom said..."
"...only family."
Emma looked into her eyes.
"May I?"
After a long silence...
Lily nodded.
Emma carefully opened the lunchbox.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Most showed Sarah and Lily together.
At parks.
Libraries.
Roadside diners.
Tiny apartments.
Campgrounds.
Always smiling.
Always moving.
Never staying anywhere for very long.
At the bottom rested a sealed envelope.
Across the front...
Written in Sarah's unmistakable handwriting...
For Emma.
Emma's hands began trembling.
She slowly opened it.
"My dearest Emma,"
"If Lily has found you..."
"Then I've either failed to protect her..."
"Or I've finally succeeded."
Emma could barely breathe.
"I'm sorry I disappeared."
"I never wanted you to believe I abandoned you."
"The truth is far more dangerous."
Tears blurred every word.
"Someone stole something that could destroy powerful people."
"I witnessed it."
"They thought I copied the evidence."
"I never told them I hid it somewhere they'd never think to look."
Emma frowned.
What evidence?
She continued reading.
"If they're still chasing us after all these years..."
"Then they still haven't found it."
Emma looked up slowly.
Lily was quietly hugging her stuffed rabbit.
Completely unaware of what the letter contained.
"Please don't trust anyone who arrives with lawyers, badges, or expensive promises."
"Especially if they already know Lily's name."
Emma's heart pounded.
The men on the red carpet...
They had known Lily's name.
Without her ever telling them.
Just then...
The security alarm chimed softly.
Emma's chief of security entered.
"Ms. Laurent."
"What is it?"
"We've identified the three men."
Emma stood immediately.
"They're not government employees."
"I assumed as much."
"They're private contractors."
"Hired by whom?"
The guard hesitated.
"That's the strange part."
"They were hired through a shell company."
"Owned by..."
He looked at the tablet.
"...Silver Horizon Studios."
Emma frowned.
One of Hollywood's biggest production companies.
The same company financing her next film.
"That makes no sense."
"So we thought."
The guard continued.
"The company was recently purchased."
"By who?"
He looked uneasy.
"Victor Ashcroft."
Emma's expression changed instantly.
Victor Ashcroft.
One of the most influential producers in Hollywood.
The man who had helped launch her international career.
The man she had trusted for nearly a decade.
"No..."
she whispered.
"It can't be."
Mrs. Brooks quietly spoke from the doorway.
"I remember him."
Emma turned.
"What?"
"He visited Sarah once."
"When?"
"Years ago."
"Before she disappeared."
Emma stared.
"You never told me."
"I didn't recognize him until tonight."
Mrs. Brooks closed her eyes, trying to remember.
"They argued."
"About what?"
"I couldn't hear everything."
"But Sarah kept saying..."
The older woman repeated the words carefully.
"If anything happens to me..."
"The truth will eventually find Emma."
The room fell silent.
Emma looked back at Sarah's letter.
There was one final paragraph she hadn't read.
She unfolded the bottom of the page.
"There's one more thing..."
"Lily doesn't know."
"The bracelet isn't the only thing I left her."
"Inside the stuffed rabbit..."
"You'll find the first key."
Emma looked toward Lily's worn toy.
Very carefully...
She unstitched a tiny section along the rabbit's back.
Hidden inside was a small brass key.
Attached to it was a faded paper tag.
Only four words were written.
Safety Deposit Box 317.
No bank name.
No address.
Nothing else.
Emma turned the key over in her hand.
"What did you hide, Sarah?"
Before anyone could answer...
The television in the living room suddenly interrupted its programming.
Every news channel switched to a live press conference.
Victor Ashcroft stood behind a podium surrounded by lawyers.
His expression was solemn.
"I would first like to express my concern for the missing child."
Emma's eyes narrowed.
Victor continued.
"My company has been assisting authorities in locating Lily for her own protection."
Mrs. Brooks gasped.
"He's lying."
Emma watched silently.
Then Victor smiled at the cameras.
"If Miss Emma Laurent is watching..."
He paused deliberately.
"I ask her to return my granddaughter immediately."
The room froze.
Emma's face drained of color.
"My granddaughter?"
Lily looked up in confusion.
"I don't have a grandpa."
Victor looked directly into the nearest camera.
"The child belongs with her family."
Emma slowly stood.
"No."
She whispered.
"You've just made your first mistake."
Because only three people had known where Lily was.
Emma.
Mrs. Brooks.
And her security team.
Which meant Victor wasn't guessing.
He already knew.
Somewhere...
Someone inside Emma's trusted circle had betrayed her.
May you like
And the hunt for Lily had just moved inside the walls of her own home.
