Chapter 9 - Unholy Alliances

Vanessa sat on the leather couch in Marcus’s private conference room, looking nothing like the glowing, champagne-tasting mistress who had stood in my living room on Christmas Eve. Her cashmere coat was gone, replaced by a simple trench coat. Her face was pale, and her hands trembled as she clutched a designer handbag to her lap.

When I walked into the room, she looked up, her eyes filled with shame and terror.

"Hannah," she breathed, her voice barely a whisper. "Thank you for seeing me. I... I didn't know where else to go."

"You have two minutes, Vanessa," I said, sitting across from her with my arms crossed. "Why are you here?"

"Andrew is trying to frame me," she burst out, tears welling in her eyes. "When the police raided his mother’s house tonight, Andrew told the detectives that I was the one who planned the offshore transfers! He told them I blackmailed him into stealing that money from his firm!"

I didn't blink. "You accepted eighty thousand dollars from a married man while his daughter’s clothes were being packed into trash bags. Forgive me if I don't find much sympathy for you."

"I know!" Vanessa cried out, putting her hands over her face. "I was foolish, greedy, and arrogant! He told me you were an abusive, gold-digging wife who was holding his money hostage! He made me believe I was saving him! I didn't realize until that night in the snow how twisted he and his mother really were!"

She reached into her bag and pulled out a heavy metal flash drive, placing it carefully on the table between us.

"What is that?" Calvin asked, stepping forward from the doorway.

"It’s a complete backup of Andrew’s private phone communications and financial messaging apps," Vanessa said, pushing it toward us. "He gave me an encrypted key three months ago to hold for him in case his firm audited his accounts. It contains audio messages from his mother, Margaret, detailing exactly how they planned to strip Hannah of her parental rights, hide the assets, and drive her out of the state."

Marcus picked up the flash drive, inspecting it closely. "Why are you giving us this?"

Vanessa looked directly at me, her eyes raw with honest remorse. "Because I saw the video, Hannah. Someone leaked Mr. Henderson’s camera footage onto local news yesterday after Margaret’s arrest. I saw myself standing on that porch with a glass of champagne while you dragged your baby through the storm."

She wiped a tear from her cheek. "I’ve done terrible things in my life, but I refuse to let that monster ruin a child's life and blame me for his crimes. Everything you need to put Andrew and Margaret away forever is on that drive."

I stared at the drive, then looked at Vanessa. She wasn't seeking forgiveness, and I wasn't offering it. But in that moment, the final piece of our shield had fallen directly into our hands.
