Chapter 8 - The Backfire

By eight o'clock the following evening, the tables had turned with devastating speed.
My father, Calvin, had immediately alerted Marcus Vance, who filed an emergency criminal complaint with the Rhode Island State Prosecutor’s office for filing a fraudulent child endangerment report and violating a protective order. Because Margaret had signed a sworn affidavit under penalty of perjury, she couldn't hide behind claims of a "misunderstanding."
I sat in Marcus’s office as the speakerphone dialed out to Richard Vance, Andrew’s weary defense attorney.
"Richard," Marcus said without preamble. "I assume you’ve been notified that your client’s mother was arrested two hours ago at her country club?"
A heavy, exhausted sigh blew through the speaker. "Marcus... I told her not to do it. I explicitly warned Margaret that any attempt to go near Hannah or contact social services would end in disaster. She wouldn't listen. She thought her family name still carried weight in this city."
"Her family name is currently on a booking sheet at the precinct," Marcus replied coldly. "And because she used Andrew’s home computer to upload the false documents, the police seized his hard drives as well under the search warrant."
"What?" Richard’s voice suddenly cracked with genuine panic. "They took Andrew’s computer?"
I leaned toward the microphone. "Why does that scare you so much, Richard? What was on Andrew's hard drive?"
Silence stretched across the line for five agonizing seconds before Richard lowered his voice to a whisper. "Andrew didn't just transfer eighty thousand dollars to Vanessa Reed, Hannah. When he realized he was going to lose his partnership at the firm, he attempted to scrub the server logs. He created a secondary ledger hiding nearly half a million dollars in offshore shell companies."
My father sat up straight, his eyes gleaming with professional sharpness. "He committed tax evasion and wire fraud."
"He was desperate," Richard admitted, his tone completely defeated. "He thought if he could bankrupt the estate, you wouldn't get a dime in child support. But now that the state police have his physical drives... they’re going to find the double ledgers."
I looked at my father, overwhelmed by the sheer depth of Andrew’s deceit. He hadn't just fallen out of love; he had systematically tried to destroy our lives, willing to commit federal crimes just to ensure Lily and I were left penniless.
"Tell Andrew to get a criminal defense lawyer," Marcus told Richard plainly. "Because family court is the least of his worries now."
Ten minutes later, as we were preparing to leave the office, Marcus’s secretary walked in. "Marcus, there’s a woman in the lobby asking to see Hannah. She says it’s urgent."

"Who is it?" I asked.
The secretary handed me a business card. Printed in gold leaf was a name I recognized instantly: Vanessa Reed.
