Chapter 10 - The Final Judgment

Six weeks later, the United States District Court in Providence was packed to capacity. The story of the corporate lawyer who abandoned his child in a blizzard only to engage in wire fraud and state-wide defamation had caught the attention of every major news outlet in New England.

I sat in the front row of the gallery next to my father, holding his hand tightly.

At the defense table, Andrew Collins looked like a shell of a man. Dressed in a drab gray prison jumpsuit, his hands cuffed at his waist, he stared blankly at the floor. Next to him sat Margaret, stripped of her designer jewelry, her face aged ten years by six weeks of relentless legal proceedings and public scandal.

The federal judge, Honorable Marcus Sterling, adjusted his robes as he prepared to read the final sentences.

"In my twenty-five years on the federal bench," Judge Sterling announced, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom, "I have rarely encountered a display of such profound moral bankruptcy and calculated cruelty."

He turned his stern gaze toward Margaret Collins.

"Mrs. Collins, for the charges of filing a fraudulent felony affidavit, conspiracy to commit fraud, and willful violation of a protective order, you are hereby sentenced to three years in a state correctional facility, followed by two years of supervised probation."

Margaret gasped, clutching her heart as court officers stepped forward to place her in handcuffs. "Andrew! Do something!" she wept, but Andrew didn't even look at her.

Judge Sterling then turned his attention to Andrew.

"Mr. Collins, as an officer of the court, you swore an oath to uphold the law. Instead, you systematically defrauded your firm, engaged in wire fraud to hide marital assets, and engaged in a malicious campaign of child endangerment and perjury. You have shown zero remorse for your actions or the safety of your young daughter."

The judge leaned forward, his voice cold as steel.

"On the federal counts of wire fraud and tax evasion, you are sentenced to seven years in federal prison. Furthermore, you are ordered to pay complete restitution of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars to the petitioner, Hannah Bennett, alongside full, permanent forfeiture of all remaining personal assets."

BANG!

The gavel struck the block like thunder.

An uproar erupted in the gallery as reporters scrambled for the doors. I watched as the guards led Andrew away in chains. Just before he passed the bar, he turned his head and looked at me one last time.

His eyes were filled with tears, desperate for a sliver of the mercy I had given him for six years.

I didn't scowl. I didn't cheer. I simply looked at him with calm, complete indifference, silently watching the man who had tried to erase me be led into the dark.
