Chapter 4 - Playing the Ultimate Card

Two weeks later, the preliminary divorce and custody hearing arrived. The courtroom was packed with local journalists, drawn by the viral Facebook story that had now captured national attention.

Daniel sat at the defense table, looking disheveled and exhausted. His cheap lawyer looked overwhelmed. Next to them sat Vanessa, who had insisted on coming, foolishly believing she could charm the judge or present herself as the "stable alternative" for Daniel's future.

On the other side sat Claire, looking elegant, calm, and utterly powerful in a tailored dark suit. Arthur Vance sat beside her, sorting through a mountain of evidence.

The judge, a no-nonsense woman named Judge Evelyn Reyes, banged her gavel. "We are here to determine temporary custody of Noah Whitmore and the distribution of martial funds pending final dissolution. Mr. Vance, you may begin."

Arthur stood up. "Your Honor, we are requesting sole legal and physical custody with zero visitation rights for Daniel Whitmore. Furthermore, we request an immediate judgment on the martial home and a permanent freeze on Mr. Whitmore’s remaining assets due to extreme martial misconduct and criminal negligence."

Daniel’s lawyer stood up, stammering. "Your Honor, this is an overreaction to a tragic misunderstanding. My client was faced with two sick children and made a split-second judgment call. He deeply regrets it. Severing parental rights is extreme."

Vanessa suddenly stood up from the gallery, unable to control herself. "Your Honor, if I may! Claire is just acting out of spite because Daniel chose me! She's using their son as a weapon! Daniel is a good father, and we can provide a loving home for Noah!"

The courtroom gasped. Judge Reyes glared at Vanessa, her expression thunderous. "Sit down, Ms. Reed, or I will have you removed by the bailiff. You have no standing in this court."

Vanessa sat down, her face turning bright red, realizing her outburst had backfired terribly.

Arthur Vance smiled coldly. "If I may present Exhibit A, Your Honor. We have obtained the medical records of Lily Reed from that night. The defense claims it was a 'split-second judgment call' based on Lily’s asthma. However, the hospital records show Lily’s blood oxygen levels were at 96% upon arrival. She had a mild bronchitis cough. She was never in danger."

Arthur turned, facing Daniel directly. "Mr. Whitmore didn't make a judgment call based on medical urgency. He chose to prioritize his mistress’s child over his own son because Vanessa Reed threatened to leave him if he didn't put her daughter first. We have the text messages extracted from Mr. Whitmore’s iCloud backup."

Arthur project the text messages onto the courtroom screens. One message from Vanessa, sent just ten minutes before the ER incident, read: “If you don't show me right now that Lily matters more to you than your old life, we are done, Daniel. Choose right now.”

The courtroom erupted into whispers. Daniel buried his face in his hands, weeping. Vanessa looked around frantically, realizing she had been exposed as a manipulative monster on the record.

Judge Reyes banged her gavel repeatedly. "Silence! I have seen enough."

She looked down at Daniel with pure disgust. "Mr. Whitmore, your actions on the night of July 13th represent the highest form of parental betrayal. You risked your son's life to appease your mistress. Effective immediately, sole custody is granted to Claire Whitmore. You are ordered to vacate the marital home within 24 hours. A restraining order is issued protecting Noah and Claire from you. And you will pay all legal fees."

Claire let out a breath she felt she had been holding for years. She looked at Daniel, who was sobbing uncontrollably, and then at Vanessa, who was already grabbing her purse, clearly preparing to abandon the sinking ship that was Daniel Whitmore.
