Chapter 2 - The Price of Treason

"He did what?" Arthur Vance’s voice dropped an octave as he read the hospital intake report Claire had provided. The high-powered attorney sat in his glass office overlooking downtown Phoenix, his expression hardening.
"He lied to the triage nurse," Claire explained calmly, sitting straight, her posture rigid. "He claimed his mistress's daughter arrived first so she would get the only available trauma room, leaving our son to suffocate and seize in the lobby. I have the medical logs, the time stamps, and the security footage from the ER entrance."
Arthur slammed the folder shut. "This isn't just a divorce case anymore, Claire. This is a bloodbath. In the state of Arizona, gross negligence and child endangerment can severely impact asset division and completely terminate parental rights. We are going to ruin him."
Meanwhile, Daniel was living in a fool's paradise. Confident that Claire would remain silent as she always did to preserve the family image, he had moved into Vanessa’s luxury apartment. He convinced himself that Noah would recover and that Claire would eventually forgive him, just as she had ignored his affair.
His delusion shattered on Thursday morning.
Daniel was the Chief Financial Officer at a major real estate investment firm. As he sat in a high-level board meeting, the heavy oak doors opened. Two process servers walked in, bypassing security, and marched straight to the head of the table.
"Daniel Whitmore?" one asked loudly.
"Yes? What is the meaning of—"
"You've been served." A thick stack of legal documents was slammed onto the table in front of his CEO and the entire board of directors.
Daniel’s eyes scanned the top page. Petition for Dissolution of Marriage. Demands: Sole legal and physical custody of Noah Whitmore, zero visitation rights for the father, 80% of all marital assets based on egregious martial misconduct, and a freeze on all joint accounts.
"What is this nonsense?" Daniel stammered, his face turning bright red as the board members stared at him in shock.
"That's not all, Mr. Whitmore," the second server said, handing him a second envelope. "You are also being served a subpoena by the Phoenix Police Department. You are under investigation for criminal child endangerment regarding the events at St. Augustine Medical Center on the night of July 13th."
The room went dead silent. The CEO stood up, his face dark. "Daniel, pack your things. You are placed on administrative leave effective immediately until this legal disaster is sorted out. Our firm cannot be associated with... whatever this horror is."
Panicking, Daniel ran out of the building and drove straight to Vanessa’s apartment. When he burst through the door, he expected comfort. Instead, he found Vanessa frantic, surrounded by half-packed suitcases.
"Daniel! What did you do?" she screamed, holding up her iPad. "It’s all over the local news! Someone leaked the ER security footage!"
Daniel looked at the screen. A popular local Facebook news page had posted the video. It showed Claire screaming for help with a convulsing Noah, while Daniel actively blocked her, pushing Lily toward the desk and lying to the nurse. The caption read: “Phoenix Executive Abandons Seizing Son in ER to Save Mistress’s Child.”
The comment section was exploding with tens of thousands of angry reactions. The public was outraged.
"Vanessa, calm down, we can fix this," Daniel pleaded, reaching for her.

Vanessa pushed him away, her fake warmth completely vanishing. "Fix it? My boutique’s website is being flooded with one-star reviews! People are calling me a child murderer! If you lose your job and your assets, how are you going to pay for my apartment? How are you going to support us?"
Daniel stared at her, horrified. For the first time, the veil lifted. She didn't love him. She loved his money and the lifestyle he provided. And now, thanks to his own choices, both were burning to the ground.
