Chapter 3 - The Noose Tightens

The public backlash was swift and merciless. Within forty-eight hours, Daniel’s firm officially terminated his employment to save their corporate reputation. His corporate credit cards were cancelled, and when he tried to access the joint bank accounts to hire a defense attorney, he found them completely frozen by court order.

Desperate, he went to a cheap, low-rent lawyer who could barely handle a traffic ticket.

"They have you cornered, Mr. Whitmore," the lawyer said, shaking his head. "The hospital surveillance video is damning. The nurse’s testimony confirms you lied about who arrived first. Your wife’s lawyer is Arthur Vance—he doesn't lose. If you go to trial, you’re looking at jail time and total financial ruin. Your best bet is to beg your wife for a settlement."

Left with no choice, Daniel drove to the hospital. Noah was scheduled to be discharged that afternoon. He waited by the side exit, hiding from the few reporters who had been lingering around.

When the automatic doors opened, Claire pushed Noah out in a wheelchair. The little boy looked frail but alert, holding a new teddy bear.

"Claire!" Daniel ran forward, tears streaming down his face. "Claire, please, stop! You have to listen to me!"

Claire immediately stepped in front of Noah’s wheelchair, shielding him. Her eyes were like shards of glass. "Do not come near my son."

"He’s my son too!" Daniel cried, dropping to his knees on the concrete. "I made a mistake, Claire! I panicked! Lily was turning blue, I thought Noah just had a common fever. You know he gets fevers! Please, tell the police to drop the charges. Call off Arthur Vance. We can work this out. I’ll break it off with Vanessa permanently. We can be a family again!"

Noah shrank back in his chair, looking confused and frightened. "Mommy? Why is Daddy crying? Why did he leave us that night?"

The question cut through the air like a knife. Daniel looked at his son, his heart breaking. "Noah, buddy, Daddy is sorry..."

"You don't get to speak to him," Claire said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "You want to talk about family, Daniel? You traded your son’s life for a mistress who doesn't even want you now that you're broke. You left your child to die. Look at him. Look at what you almost killed."

"Claire, please, I have nothing left! They fired me! The bank accounts are frozen!"

"Good," Claire said coldly. "Because by the time I am done with you, you will realize that the ER lobby wasn't the only place where you came too late. You are too late for forgiveness. You are too late for a second chance. You are dead to us."

She pushed Noah’s wheelchair toward her car, leaving Daniel kneeling in the dirt, completely shattered as the reality of his total ruin finally set in.
