Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

The ballroom had emptied of guests within twenty minutes, leaving only Damen, Evelyn, the triplets, Elena, and Marcus standing beneath the glowing crystal chandeliers.

Damen stood silently by the mahogany bar, pouring a glass of scotch with shaking hands. The empire he had built over two decades had legally transferred ownership to Carter Meridian Capital forty minutes earlier with the stroke of a pen.

He wasn't ruined financially—Evelyn had structured the buyout to preserve the corporation's infrastructure and protect thousands of innocent dockworkers and employees—but his absolute, uncontested reign as the undisputed Don of New York was officially over.

He turned around, holding the glass, and walked slowly toward the sofa where Evelyn sat.

The triplets were sitting on the plush carpet nearby. Luca was inspecting a golden pocket watch Marcus had handed him, Marco was reading a book about architecture, and Nico was loudly debating Marcus on whether a security guard needed a license to drive a tank.

Damen sat down on the edge of the sofa, a few feet away from Evelyn.

"Vincent is dead," Damen said quietly.

Evelyn didn't flinch. She took a sip of mineral water. "When?"

"Twenty minutes ago. My men picked him up at his Jersey estate the moment Elena presented the audit. He tried to run. He won't be bothering anyone ever again." Damen stared down at his glass. "I was a fool, Evelyn. I let my paranoia blind me. When the feds raided my terminal five years ago, I couldn't bear the thought that someone inside my inner circle—someone I trusted—had betrayed me. So when the fake evidence pointed to you, I believed it because it was easier to blame you than to admit my own vulnerability."

"That isn't an apology, Damen," Evelyn said, turning her head to look at him with cool detachment.

"I know," Damen replied, his voice thick with emotion. "I don't expect you to forgive me. Not tonight. Not ever. But... can I spend time with them?"

He looked toward the triplets.

Evelyn followed his gaze. She watched Nico laugh loudly at something Marcus said, while Luca carefully explained the structural load-bearing capacity of the coffee table. She thought of the last five years—the sleepless nights, the lonely triumphs, the relentless drive it took to build Carter Meridian from a rented desk into a three-billion-dollar juggernaut while raising three fatherless boys alone.

She had protected them. She had given them strength. But she also knew what it meant to grow up with ghosts.

"They need a father, Damen," Evelyn said softly. "Not a legend. Not a mafia boss. Not a billionaire who buys their affection. They need a man who is willing to earn their trust one brick at a time, exactly like I had to build my life after you threw me away."

Damen nodded slowly, a profound sense of gratitude washing over his hardened features. "I will earn it, Evelyn. I swear to you on my life."

Before Evelyn could reply, the heavy security doors at the main entrance of the Ashford Crown burst open.

A burst of gunfire shattered the crystal chandelier above the foyer.
