Chapter 2 - The Calculation of Kings

The silence in the grand ballroom was so profound that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a distant hurricane.

Damen moved.

It was a slow, deliberate motion, like a predator uncoiling from a long sleep. He set his champagne glass down on a passing waiter’s tray with a sharp clink that made several executives flinch. He walked down the center aisle of the ballroom, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor.

Every eye in the room followed him. Three hundred people held their breath, waiting for the storm to break.

Evelyn did not stop walking. She brought the triplets to a halt ten feet from where Damen stood.

Marcus Hale, her head of security, stepped out from the shadows beside the left pillar, his hand resting casually inside his jacket, his cold eyes scanning every armed Moretti guard in the room.

Damen stopped. He stood towering over Evelyn, his dark gaze burning into her face. The sheer intensity of his presence could intimidate a seasoned politician, but Evelyn simply stared back, her expression as calm and unyielding as a winter glacier.

"Evelyn," Damen’s voice grated out, a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated through the silent hall. "You brought guests."

"They aren't guests, Damen," Evelyn replied, her voice smooth, crystalline, and entirely devoid of fear. "They’re my sons."

The words dropped like an atomic bomb into the middle of the ballroom.

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Several board members clutched their chests.

Damen’s eyes flashed with a lethal, blinding mixture of shock, betrayal, and white-hot fury. He looked down at the three little boys standing beside Evelyn.

"Five years," Damen whispered, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You hid my sons from me for five years."

"You didn't give me a choice, Damen," Evelyn replied, stepping slightly forward to shield the boys with her body. "When your security threw me out onto the street with three hundred dollars, you told me that if I ever came near your world again, you would ensure I had nothing left. I took you at your word. I protected my children from a man who destroyed me without listening."

Luca, the oldest, looked up at Damen with cold, calculating gray eyes. He adjusted his tiny bowtie, exactly like his mother had taught him.

"You're standing too close to our mother," Luca said, his voice eerily calm and clear in the quiet room. "And your heart rate is elevated. Are you going to be a problem?"

The entire ballroom stared in stunned disbelief. A five-year-old boy had just analyzed Damen Moretti like a hostile business asset.

Marco nodded sagely. "If he's a problem, Marcus can take him outside."

Nico pointed a tiny finger at Damen’s expensive lapel. "Your tie is crooked. If you're going to yell at Mom, you should at least look professional."

Damen stared down at his sons. The iron armor he had worn around his heart for thirty-nine years shattered into a million pieces. He reached out a trembling, tattooed hand, wanting to touch Luca’s hair, wanting to confirm that these three miracles were real flesh and blood.

Evelyn stepped back, swatting his hand away with cold precision.

"Don't," Evelyn warned softly. "You lost the right to touch them five years ago."

Damen looked back up at her, his dark eyes burning with an agonizing intensity. "You think you can walk in here with my blood, flaunt my children in front of my entire empire, and walk away?"

"I am not walking away, Damen," Evelyn smiled—a cold, beautiful, devastating smile. "I am just getting started."
