Chapter 4 - The Gala of Reckoning

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was a spectacle of sparkling crystal chandeliers, cascading white orchids, and men in tailored tuxedos laughing alongside women dripping in diamonds.
To the high-society world of New York, it was a philanthropic evening for the Rinaldi Children’s Foundation.
To the underground power brokers seated around the velvet-covered tables, it was the night the Rinaldi empire was supposed to change hands.
Claire stepped out of the black limousine, her heart racing against her ribs.
She wore an floor-length emerald green silk gown that Dante had ordered for her, her dark hair pinned up in an elegant vintage style, simple diamond earrings sparkling in the night air. Beside her, Leo, Gabriel, and Mateo walked proudly in matching mini-tuxedos, holding her hands tightly.
Dante stepped out after them, looking impossibly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo. He offered Claire his arm.
"You look breathtaking, Claire," he whispered as they walked up the red carpet, flanked by flashbulbs from reporters.
"I feel like an imposter," Claire muttered under her breath, holding his arm tightly. "I usually serve the champagne at events like this, not wear six-figure silk."
"You're not an imposter," Dante said firmly. "You're the strongest woman in this room."
Inside the ballroom, the tension was palpable the moment the Rinaldi family made their entrance.
Marco stood near the main stage, holding a glass of scotch, surrounded by several older men in dark suits—the senior board members of the syndicate, alongside Don Vincenzo Moretti, a ruthless man with grey hair and cold, reptilian eyes.
When Marco saw Claire walking beside Dante, holding the triplets' hands, his eyes narrowed in absolute contempt.
He handed his glass to a waiter and strode over to them, a fake, charming smile plastered on his face.
"Dante! Brother!" Marco announced loudly, attracting the attention of nearby guests. "I see you brought the nanny to the foundation gala. How... charmingly domestic."
"Ms. Beaumont is not just the nanny, Marco," Dante said smoothly, his tone laced with ice. "She is my partner in managing this family."
Marco laughed dryly, leaning in closer so only they could hear. "Enjoy the party while it lasts, brother. The legal team from First National is waiting in the private lounge upstairs. The transfer documents for Elena's estate are ready. You sign them tonight, or Vincenzo’s men make sure your little 'domestic tranquility' comes to an abrupt end."
"Is that a threat, Marco?" Claire asked, stepping forward, eyeing him with cold disgust. "Just like the flashlight you held by the side of the road three years ago?"
Marco’s smile instantly withered. His eyes flashed with a sudden, vicious panic. "What did you say?"
"You heard her," Dante said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "Upstairs, Marco. Let's finish this."
Dante signaled to Henry Brandt, who was standing quietly near the entrance. Henry nodded and motioned for two security guards to escort the triplets to a secure private room with Claire.
"Stay with the boys, Claire," Dante whispered, brushing his knuckles gently against her cheek. "This will only take twenty minutes."
"Be careful, Dante," she pleaded softly.
As Dante walked toward the private elevator with Marco and Don Moretti, Claire felt an intense gut instinct scream inside her mind. Something was wrong. Marco was too calm, too confident.
She took the boys into the private VIP suite on the third floor, where Henry stood guard at the door.
"Mr. Brandt," Claire said, pacing across the room. "Why was Marco so sure Dante would sign tonight? What leverage does he think he has?"
Henry frowned. "Marco claimed he had an operative inside the manor who secured physical proof of Dante’s negligence... wait."
Claire’s phone chimed in her clutch purse.
It was an anonymous text message containing a link to a live video stream.
Claire opened the link. Her blood ran cold.

The video showed a recorded scene from inside the Rinaldi manor from three days ago—edited heavily to make it appear as though Dante was threatening Claire and abusing his children, alongside forged financial transactions showing Dante funneling foundation money into offshore accounts.
"They aren't just taking the trust, Henry," Claire gasped, her hands trembling. "They're streaming this video right now to the entire syndicate board and broadcasting it to news outlets! They're destroying his reputation publicly so the state strips him of custody and hands the boys—and the trust—over to Marco tonight!"
