Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

The fall of the Vance family was swift, brutal, and absolute.
With the unedited video evidence and the corporate audit exposed to the public, the legal system moved at unprecedented speed. Richard Vance was taken into custody for grand tax fraud and embezzlement, while Victoria Vance was arrested for felony assault and slander.
Two weeks later, the final court hearing concluded.
Victoria sat at the defense table, wearing an orange jumpsuit instead of her usual white designer suits. Her makeup was gone, her hair was tied back in a messy bun, and her eyes were hollow with defeat.
The judge struck the gavel down with a heavy thud.
"For charges of felony assault, reckless endangerment, and systemic workplace harassment, Victoria Vance is hereby sentenced to three years in state custody, with mandatory community service."
Victoria collapsed into her chair, sobbing uncontrollably. As the bailiffs cuffed her wrists to escort her out of the courtroom, she looked up and saw Claire standing near the gallery exit.
Claire was dressed simply, wearing the same modest blue coat she had worn weeks ago. She looked at Victoria not with hatred, nor with triumph, but with quiet pity.
"Why?" Victoria choked out as she passed Claire in the aisle. "You had everything... why did you have to come down to my world and destroy me?"
Claire stopped and looked Victoria in the eyes.

"I didn't destroy you, Victoria," Claire said softly. "You built a castle out of glass and spent your life throwing stones at everyone around you. You destroyed yourself. I just stepped out of the way."
As Victoria was led through the heavy wooden doors toward the holding cells, the dark chapter that had plagued the city’s social scene was finally brought to a close.
