Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

Two days after the incident at the rooftop lounge, Claire sat in the top-floor office of the Vane Tower. The room offered a panoramic view of the skyline, bathed in the soft orange hue of the late afternoon sun.
She wore an elegant dark blue blazer, her hair tied in a sleek ponytail. The black waitress uniform was gone, but the humility she had cultivated over six months remained.
A knock sounded at the door. Marcus entered, carrying a tablet.
"Director," Marcus said softly. "Julian Sterling is downstairs. He has been waiting for three hours. He insists on speaking with you personally."
Claire didn't look up from her laptop. "Tell him I'm busy."
"He said it’s not about business," Marcus added carefully. "He said it’s about six years ago... at the conservatory in Switzerland."
Claire’s fingers paused over the keyboard. A subtle flicker of emotion crossed her eyes before she masked it.
"Show him in," she said quietly.
A few moments later, Julian entered the massive office. The arrogant, composed heir that the public knew seemed slightly worn down. He looked at Claire, not as a business magnate, but with a gaze filled with deep regret.
"Claire," Julian said, his voice barely above a whisper. "It really is you."
"Sit down, Mr. Sterling," Claire said professionally, gesturing to the leather chair across her desk. "Let's keep this short."
Julian sat, his hands clasped tightly together. "I didn't know you were back. After you vanished from Geneva six years ago... I searched everywhere for you."
"You didn't search very hard," Claire replied, a sharp bite in her tone. "Or perhaps you were too busy getting arranged to marry Victoria Vance."
"That marriage was never about love!" Julian spoke urgently, leaning forward. "My family was bleeding capital after the European market crash. The Vances had the liquidity we needed. I didn't know Victoria was the monster she revealed herself to be. If I had known..."
"If you had known she would cross me, you mean," Claire interrupted, leaning back in her chair. "If she had continued abusing ordinary people, you would have married her without batting an eye. Isn't that right?"
Julian flinched. The truth cut deeper than any blade.
"Claire, I made mistakes," Julian confessed, his eyes searching hers. "When we were in Switzerland, before all this corporate weight fell on my shoulders, we promised each other that we would change the way our families did business. I lost my way. But seeing you on that rooftop... watching you stand up to that madness... reminded me of who I used to be."
Claire looked at him quietly for a long moment. She saw the pain in his eyes, but she also knew that trust, once broken, could not be restored with smooth words.

"If you truly want to remember who you used to be, Julian," Claire said, opening a folder on her desk, "then don't offer me apologies. Prove it through your actions."
She slid a contract across the desk toward him.
