Chapter 1 - The Fallen Mask

The heavy silence hanging over the sky lounge was thick enough to choke on. The sharp smell of vintage champagne mixed with the ozone tint of the humid night air, but no one dared to breathe.
In the center of the destruction stood Claire, still holding a serving tray in one hand while her other hand casually untied the simple black apron wrapped around her waist. She let the cloth fall into the puddle of shattered crystal and spilled Moët.
The woman in the white suit, whose name was Victoria Vance—heiress to Vance Logistics and fiancé to the city's most elusive billionaire—stangled on her own words. Her chest heaved beneath tailored silk.
"You..." Victoria stammered, taking an involuntary step back, her heel crunching against broken glass. "You’re just a temp. A zero. I hired this catering company myself!"
"You hired Aura Events," Claire corrected quietly, her voice smooth, calm, and utterly devoid of fear. She unbuttoned the top button of her plain black shirt, letting the collar part.
Dripping beneath the dim ambient lighting was the Elysian Tear—a forty-carat, pear-cut blue diamond resting on a platinum chain. It was a one-of-a-kind piece created by the legendary House of Vane, an artifact so rare that only one family on the continent possessed it.
The lead bodyguard, a six-foot-four man named Marcus with a jagged scar along his jaw, stepped forward and bowed thirty degrees toward Claire.
"The perimeter is secure, Director Claire," Marcus announced in a crisp, military tone that resonated across the quiet rooftop. "Your father has landed at the helipad downstairs. He requested to know if you wish for us to clear the floor."
Gasps echoed through the crowd of elite socialites.
Director?
"Director Claire Vane?!" a high-society influencer whispered loudly from the second row of spectators, clutching her phone. "The sole heiress of the Vane Global Empire? The girl who went missing from the social scene three years ago?!"
Victoria’s face drained of every ounce of color. The arrogance that had fueled her just seconds ago dissolved into sheer, unadulterated terror. The Vane Family didn't just own real estate; they owned the supply chains, the shipping docks, and ninety percent of the debt backing Vance Logistics.
"Victoria," Claire said softly, taking a single, deliberate step toward her. The soles of her boots clicked softly against the black marble floor. "Three years ago, at the Vane Charity Gala, you pushed a young intern down the stairs because she accidentally stepped on your dress. You bought your way out of the lawsuit using your father’s connections."
Claire paused, looking down at her soaked black boots. "I made a promise to myself that night. Before I took over my father's seat on the board, I would spend six months working at the lowest levels of every subsidiary we own. To see how people like you treat those who can't fight back."
Victoria’s knees shook visibly. "Claire... I—I didn't know! It was an accident! The champagne tower, I tripped—"
"You didn't trip," Claire cut her off, her eyes cold as ice. "You pushed it because I didn't smile when you asked for a refill."
Claire turned her back on Victoria and looked at Marcus. "Lock the doors. Nobody leaves this rooftop until the police arrive to document the property destruction and personal assault. And Marcus?"

"Yes, Director?"
"Call the chief executive officer of Vance Logistics. Tell him his daughter just liquidated their entire line of credit."
