Chapter 5 - The Trial of Truth

Forty-eight hours later, the Federal District Courthouse was surrounded by news vans, armed federal marshals, and hundreds of reporters.
News of the corporate conspiracy had leaked to the national press after Ethan surrendered the micro-flash drive directly to the Department of Justice. The evidence was overwhelming: private emails, wire transfers, survey maps, and audio logs confirming that Richard Vance had knowingly placed a U.S. Army unit in extreme danger for commercial greed.
Inside Courtroom 402, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Richard Vance sat at the defense table, surrounded by six top-tier defense attorneys. His face was pale, his usual arrogance replaced by a frantic, trapped expression. Across the room sat the Lead Prosecutor, flanked by Ethan, Sarah, and Emily.
The judge slammed her gavel down hard. "Court will come to order."
The prosecutor stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, the state presents its key witness: Sergeant Ethan Vance."
Ethan stood up, dressed in his crisp, dark blue Army Service Uniform, his medals shining under the court lights. He walked to the witness stand with a slight limp, took the oath, and sat down.
For the next two hours, Ethan delivered a chilling, airtight testimony. He detailed the mission in the valley, the illegal survey equipment they discovered, Mark Miller’s incredible bravery, and the subsequent attack on Sarah's home by corporate mercenaries.
"Sergeant Vance," the prosecutor asked, stepping closer. "In your expert military opinion, why was Sergeant Mark Miller’s unit deployed to that specific sector?"
"They were deployed as human shields, sir," Ethan answered, his voice firm and unwavering. "My uncle, Richard Vance, paid off corrupt officials to send brave American soldiers into a hazard zone to clear land for his lithium mine. Mark Miller died because of corporate treason."
Richard’s lead attorney jumped up. "Objection, Your Honor! Speculation!"
"Overruled!" the judge snapped, glaring at the defense table. "The digital evidence provided in Exhibit A speaks for itself."
The prosecutor turned to the jury. "The prosecution rests."
As the defense team scrambled to make desperate closing arguments, Richard suddenly stood up, his face twisted in rage. He pointed an trembling finger at Ethan.
"You ungrateful brat!" Richard yelled, breaking decorum. "I built this family! I built an empire! You side with these nobody peasants over your own blood?!"
Ethan looked at his uncle calmly, his eyes filled with profound pity.
"Blood doesn't make a family, Richard," Ethan said softly, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "Honor does. Sacrifice does. Love does. Mark Miller was more of a brother to me than you ever were a father or uncle. You lost your family the day you decided money was worth more than human life."
The jury deliberated for less than thirty minutes.
When they returned, the foreperson delivered a unanimous verdict: GUILTY on all counts, including corporate espionage, treason, conspiracy to commit murder, and armed assault.

As federal marshals stepped forward to clap heavy steel handcuffs around Richard Vance’s wrists, the judge added a final declaration: "This court orders the immediate liquidation of all assets owned by Vance Global Enterprise, with eighty percent of the corporate wealth converted into a state trust for the surviving families of the fallen soldiers, led by Sarah and Emily Miller."
Richard hung his head as he was led away in chains, his empire reduced to dust.
