Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

Three months passed, but the sun seemed to have permanently set over the Miller household.
The quiet suburban home that once echoed with laughter now felt like a tomb. Emily spent her days sitting by her bedroom window, holding her father's dog tag, staring at the empty driveway. Sarah worked double shifts at the local hospital, trying to keep up with the mortgage payments while drowning her grief in endless work.
Ethan had stayed in town. Having been honorably discharged due to a shrapnel injury in his leg, he rented a small room near the neighborhood. He felt an overwhelming moral obligation—a sacred oath made to a dying brother—to watch over Mark’s family. He mowed their lawn, fixed the leaking roof, and walked Emily to school from a respectful distance whenever Sarah was working late.
However, peace was short-lived.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, a shiny black luxury sedan pulled up to Sarah’s house. A sharp-dressed man in an expensive suit stepped out, holding a leather briefcase. His name was Richard Vance—an arrogant, high-powered real estate developer who also happened to be Ethan’s estranged, wealthy uncle.
Sarah opened the door, her face pale with exhaustion. "Can I help you?"
"Mrs. Sarah Miller?" Richard asked, offering a cold, commercial smile. "My name is Richard Vance. I represent Vance Global Enterprises. I’m here regarding your late husband’s property estate."
"Property estate?" Sarah frowned. "Mark didn't own any commercial property."
"No, but his father did," Richard said smoothly, unzipping his briefcase. "Thirty years ago, your father-in-law signed a land-collateral agreement with my firm. According to the original deed, this entire residential block—including your home—was leveraged against a loan that was never fully settled. Now that Mark is officially declared deceased by the military, the loan default clause has been triggered."
Sarah gasped, holding the door frame for support. "What are you talking about?! We’ve lived here for ten years! We paid off our mortgage!"
"You paid the mortgage to the bank, Mrs. Miller, but the underlying land title belongs to my firm," Richard stated coldly, handing her an eviction notice. "You have thirty days to vacate the premises. Or, of course... you can sell the land rights to me today for a fraction of its market value, and I'll grant you a small relocation stipend."
"You're kicking a war widow and an eight-year-old orphan out of their home?!" Sarah yelled, her voice shaking with outrage.
"Business is business, Mrs. Miller," Richard replied indifferently.
"Get off her porch, Richard."
A low, dangerous voice echoed from the driveway. Ethan stepped out of his old pickup truck, his military boots thudding heavily against the wet pavement. His eyes burned with fierce intensity as he glared at his uncle.
Richard turned around, his smug smile faltering slightly. "Ethan? What on earth are you doing in this sleepy town?"
"I asked you to leave Sarah’s property," Ethan said, walking up the steps and placing himself firmly between Richard and the front door. "Now."
"Ethan, don't be naive," Richard sneered, adjusting his tie. "You always were too soft. You ran off to play soldier while I built an empire. This woman’s husband owed a debt. The law is on my side."
"Mark Miller gave his life for this country!" Ethan growled, stepping into Richard's personal space, his towering frame casting a long shadow over the developer. "And I gave him my word that I would protect his family. If you lay a single legal finger on this house, Richard, I will tear your empire apart brick by brick."
Richard narrowed his eyes, realizing Ethan wasn't backing down. "You have thirty days, Ethan. Tell your little friend to start packing."

As Richard sped away in his sedan, Sarah sank onto the porch bench, trembling violently. "We have nowhere to go, Ethan. My savings were drained by Mark's memorial service... We're going to lose everything."
Ethan knelt beside Sarah, his jaw set like stone. "No, you aren't, Sarah. Mark saved my life in that valley. I won't let his family be destroyed on home soil. I'm going to find a way to stop him."
