Chapter 3 - The Cryptic Journal

That night, Ethan sat in his small apartment surrounded by legal documents, military records, and old family files. He knew how ruthless his uncle Richard was. Richard had spent decades buying up town titles through predatory loopholes, crushing small families to build shopping malls and high-rise apartments.
As Ethan rubbed his tired eyes, his phone buzzed. It was Sarah.
"Ethan... you need to come over," Sarah’s voice sounded strange, hushed and urgent. "Emily found something in Mark's old military trunk."
Ten minutes later, Ethan was sitting at Sarah's kitchen table. In front of him lay a thick, leather-bound journal with a brass lock that had been forced open.
"Mark always kept a personal journal," Sarah explained, pushing a mug of tea toward Ethan. "He took it on every deployment. When the military shipped his personal belongings back last week, I didn't have the heart to open his trunk. But Emily was looking for his old army cap today and found this hidden underneath a false bottom."
Ethan carefully turned the yellowed pages. Most of the entries were heartfelt letters to Sarah and Emily, full of love and longing for home. But as Ethan reached the final entries—written just two weeks before Mark went missing—the tone changed drastically.
“October 14th: Something isn't right about this deployment. The tactical maps we were given for the Valley Recon Mission were classified under a private contractor heading: VANCE GLOBAL ENTERPRISE LOGISTICS. Why is a civilian defense contractor directing military patrols into an unmapped sector?
Ethan’s heart skipped a beat. He looked up at Sarah. "My uncle's company?"
"Keep reading," Sarah whispered.
“October 18th: I found what Vance Global was looking for in the valley. It isn't a military target. It's an undocumented lithium and rare-earth mineral deposit worth hundreds of millions. They are using our military unit to clear out local resistance so their private mining team can move in. I copied the survey coordinates and the illegal contract files onto a micro-flash drive. If anything happens to me, I’m hiding the drive inside my custom silver locket—the one Ethan helped me fix.”
Ethan gasped. "The silver dog tag!"
He stood up so fast his chair knocked over. "Where is the dog tag, Sarah?!"
"Emily has it!" Sarah said, her eyes wide with realization. "She wears it around her neck every night!"
They rushed into Emily’s bedroom. The little girl was fast asleep, clutching her stuffed bear. Hanging around her small neck was the tarnished silver dog tag Ethan had handed her at the airport.
Ethan quietly crept over to the bed, gently lifting the dog tag. He examined the metal frame closely under his penlight. Near the top rim, where the chain looped through, was a microscopic seam. Using his pocket knife's fine blade, Ethan pressed a hidden notch inside the metal.
CLICK.
The back casing of the silver tag popped open, revealing a tiny, black micro-flash drive no larger than a fingernail.
"My God..." Sarah breathed, covering her mouth. "Mark didn't just die saving his teammates... he died because he discovered a corporate crime!"

"This changes everything," Ethan said, his eyes burning with cold anger as he plugged the drive into his portable tablet. "This drive contains proof that Richard Vance bribed high-ranking military officials to send Mark’s unit into a death trap just to secure a mining site. It proves corporate negligence, fraud, and treason."
Suddenly, the glass window in the living room shattered with a violent crash!
