Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Century

Six months later.

The County Criminal Courthouse was surrounded by hundreds of news vans, satellite trucks, and crowd barriers keeping back thousands of onlookers.

Inside the packed courtroom, the air was tense.

Isabella Rossi sat at the defense table wearing a drab, orange prison jumpsuit. Her luxurious blonde hair was dull and unstyled; her face was pale, thin, and devoid of makeup. Six months in high-security pre-trial detention had completely stripped away her aristocratic aura. Sitting beside her was a tired, court-appointed public defender—her family’s fortune had vanished completely, leaving them unable to afford private council.

Across the room, Marcus and I sat in the front row of the gallery.

I was holding our six-week-old baby girl, Sophia Vance Thorne, wrapped in a soft pink blanket. Sophia was healthy, beautiful, and completely oblivious to the dark storm that had preceded her arrival into the world.

Judge Sarah Montgomery took her seat on the bench, slamming her wooden gavel down to quiet the gallery.

"In the matter of the State versus Isabella Rossi," Judge Montgomery announced, her voice echoing clearly off the wood-paneled walls. "The jury has reached a unanimous verdict."

The foreperson of the jury stood up, unfolding a piece of paper.

Isabella stood up slowly, her hands trembling in her steel wrist shackles.

"On count one, Attempted Murder of an Unborn Child," the foreperson read, "we find the defendant, Isabella Rossi, guilty."

Isabella let out a quiet, pathetic gasp.

"On count two, Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon, we find the defendant, guilty."

"On count three, Aggravated Obstruction of Justice, we find the defendant, guilty."

"On count four, Filing a False Police Report, we find the defendant, guilty."

A wave of whispered relief swept through the courtroom gallery.

Judge Montgomery turned her attention directly to Isabella, her eyes cold behind her reading glasses.

"Ms. Rossi," Judge Montgomery said sternly. "The evidence presented in this court demonstrated a level of calculated, malicious cruelty that shocks the conscience of this court. You attempted to destroy a mother and her unborn child out of pure, unadulterated entitlement and jealousy. You then attempted to use your wealth and influence to frame your victim."

The judge picked up her pen.

"For the charge of Attempted Murder of an Unborn Child, I sentence you to twenty-five years in the state penitentiary. For the charges of Felony Assault and Obstruction, I sentence you to an additional ten years, to be served consecutively. You will not be eligible for parole for thirty years."

Thirty years.

Isabella’s knees gave out completely. She collapsed onto the floor of the courtroom, sobbing hysterically as the bailiffs grabbed her arms to drag her away.

"Marcus!" Isabella shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings as she was pulled toward the holding cells. "Marcus, please! Look at me! Don't let them take me! Marcus!"

Marcus didn't turn his head. He didn't give her a single glance.

Instead, he turned to me, wrapping his arm securely around my shoulders, pressing a gentle kiss against the top of my head while I cradled our baby daughter against my chest.

As Isabella was dragged through the iron doors into the dark corridor of the prison transport, the doors slammed shut with a heavy, final metallic thud.

The nightmare was over.
