Chapter 1 - The Mask Shatters

The silence in the luxury suite was heavier than the winter storm howling outside the hospital's reinforced glass windows. I was on the cold marble floor, my breath coming in ragged, painful gasps as I cradled my seven-month bump. The sharp pain in my lower back radiated down my legs, but my focus was entirely on the tiny, precious life inside me.
Please be okay. Please, baby, just stay strong.
Across the room, Isabella Rossi was putting on the performance of her life. She stood trembling in her floor-length crimson gown, holding her hands over her face as soft, shuddering sobs escaped her lips.
"Marcus..." Isabella whimpered, her voice dripping with artificial terror as she took a timid step toward my husband. "I... I don't know what happened to her! I came upstairs just to check if she needed a glass of water, and she... she snapped! She accused me of wanting your money, grabbed my dress, and tried to push me! I only pushed her back to protect myself!"
Elaine Parker, the high-society event coordinator standing behind Marcus, gasped softly. "Oh my goodness... is she crazy? Pushing a guest at her own charity gala?"
Marcus didn't utter a single word.
He didn't look at Elaine. He barely glanced at Isabella’s theatrical tears. His sharp, icy grey eyes—the same eyes that made international boardrooms crumble—were locked entirely on me.
In a fraction of a second, the distance between us vanished.
Marcus dropped to his knees on the marble floor, completely ignoring the scattered shards of crystal glass that sliced into his designer tuxedo trousers. His large, warm hands immediately covered mine over my stomach, his breathing heavy and erratic.
"Khloe," his voice cracked—a sound I had never heard from Marcus Thorne in all the years I had known him. "Look at me, sweetheart. Look at me."
"The baby..." I choked out, a hot tear slipping past my eyelashes and falling onto his hand. "Marcus, the baby... she kicked me..."
The air in the room instantly dropped below freezing.
Marcus didn't yell. He didn't explode with rage. Instead, his entire body rigidified into pure, terrifying stillness. Slowly, he lifted his head and turned his gaze toward Isabella.
If looks could kill, Isabella Rossi would have dropped dead on the spot. The sheer, predatory coldness in my husband's eyes made Isabella’s rehearsed sobs freeze in her throat. She took an involuntary step back, her heel catching on the hem of her red dress.
"Marcus, you have to believe me—" Isabella stammered, her voice losing its confidence. "She's lying to you! She’s jealous because she knows you and I have history! She wants to ruin my reputation—"
"Shut your mouth," Marcus said. His voice was terrifyingly low, carrying a quiet authority that vibrated through the floorboards. "If you open your mouth again in my presence, Isabella, I will make sure you never speak in public again."
Before Isabella could reply, the double doors of the private suite were slammed open with immense force.
"Get out of the way!" a commanding voice roared from the hallway.
Dr. Arthur Vance—the Chief of Surgery and Senior Board Member of Saint Jude International Hospital—stroked into the room, flanked by four trauma nurses and two armed hospital security officers. Arthur was not just a world-renowned surgeon; he was my mother’s older brother. My uncle.
Arthur took one look at me lying on the floor, my white silk maternity gown stained with champagne and dust, and his face turned red with absolute fury.
"Gurney! Right now!" Arthur ordered the nurses, dropping to his knees beside Marcus. "Khloe, darling, Uncle Arthur is here. Stay still. Don't move your pelvis."
"Arthur," Marcus said, his hands still holding mine tight. "Check the baby. Tell me my child is safe."
"We are moving her to the emergency obstetric ICU immediately," Arthur said, his sharp eyes darting over to Isabella, who was backing toward the door. "Security! Lock down this room! Nobody leaves!"
"Wait!" Elaine Parker protested, stepping forward. "Dr. Vance, you can't just detain Ms. Rossi! Her father is a major donor to this hospital! This was clearly a private dispute between two women—"
"I don't give a damn if her father owns the moon, Elaine!" Arthur barked, standing up to his full six-foot-two height and pointing a finger directly at the event coordinator's face. "This is a private medical suite in my facility! And the woman bleeding on this floor is my niece!"
Isabella’s face drained of every drop of color. She looked at Arthur, then at me, as if realizing for the very first time that I wasn't just a quiet, helpless orphan Marcus had plucked from obscurity. I had powerful blood backing me, too.
The trauma nurses carefully lifted me onto the gurney. As they began rolling me toward the private elevator, Marcus walked right beside me, holding my hand so tightly his knuckles turned white.
"I'm coming with you," Marcus told the doctors.
"No, Marcus," I whispered, reaching up to touch his face, feeling the intense tension in his jaw. "Go to the security room. Don't let her erase it. Don't let her family cover this up."
Marcus stopped at the elevator doors. He looked at me, his eyes burning with a dark, promise of retribution, and kissed my forehead.
May you like
"I will tear her world apart, Khloe," he vowed softly against my skin. "I promise you."
As the elevator doors closed, I saw Marcus turn around. He didn't head for the gala downstairs. He marched directly toward the hospital’s central security complex, his coat trailing behind him like a dark storm cloud, ready to rain absolute destruction upon everyone who had touched his family.
