Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Century

Six months later.

The wheelchair squeaked softly against the marble floors of the Southern District of New York Federal Courthouse. Emily sat upright, no longer encased in the suffocating body cast, though she still wore a supportive brace around her torso. Her strength had returned, and her eyes were burning with an undeniable victory.

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. Reporters, socialites, and citizens lined the benches, all eager to witness the final fall of the Montgomery empire.

In the defense box sat Victoria and Ethan. Six months in federal detention had stripped away their glamour. Victoria’s silver hair was unstyled, her face lined with stress and age. Ethan looked broken, his eyes sunken and staring blankly at the floor.

"The prosecution calls Emily Montgomery," the federal prosecutor announced.

A hush fell over the room as Marcus Vance wheeled Emily to the witness stand. She took the oath, her voice clear, steady, and resonant.

For the next four hours, Emily took the court through a masterclass in financial destruction. She presented the fake invoices, the hidden shell companies, and the audio recordings from the hospital and the townhouse.

The defense attorney stood up, trying one last desperate tactic. "Your Honor, the witness is a disgruntled ex-wife who suffered a traumatic brain injury from a tragic fall. Her testimony is biased, and the recordings were obtained without proper consent!"

Emily looked directly at the judge. "Your Honor, if I may." She reached into her folder and pulled out a single, certified document. "This is the original architectural blueprint of the Montgomery townhouse balcony, alongside a metallurgy report conducted by an independent forensic team three days after my fall."

She glanced at Victoria, who stiffened in her chair.

"The report proves that the structural support beams of that balcony were intentionally cut with a high-powered saw forty-eight hours before I was pushed. And the fingerprints found on the tool recovered from the basement workshop belong exclusively to Ethan and Victoria Montgomery."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. The defense attorney slowly sat down, realizing there was absolutely nothing left to defend.
