Chapter 2 - The Audit Begins

The headlines the next morning tore through the Manhattan elite like wildfire. “Upper East Side Dynasty in Chains: Montgomery Matriarch Arrested at Bedside.”

While the media swarmed the steps of the courthouse where Victoria and Ethan were being held without bail, Emily was quietly transferred to a highly secure, undisclosed medical facility. Her physical recovery would take months, but her war against the Montgomery family had just entered its second phase.

Sitting by her bedside, Agent Clara Vance opened a heavy black laptop. "You almost got yourself killed, Emily," Clara said, her voice a mix of professional sternness and deep worry. "If Sarah hadn't gotten that transmitter to you in time..."

"I knew Victoria wouldn't be able to resist finishing the job herself," Emily said, her voice still raspy from the pillow's suffocating pressure. "She's too arrogant to let anyone else do her dirty work. But more importantly, Clara—did you get the server keys?"

Clara nodded, tapping the keyboard. "When Ethan confessed in the hospital room, it gave us the probable cause we needed to execute the federal warrants. We seized every computer, hard drive, and ledger from Montgomery Enterprises last night."

Emily smiled, a cold, calculated expression that completely erased the image of the "naïve, clumsy wife" Victoria thought she had married. "Ethan thought he married a waitress who got lucky. He forgot that before I ever wore a designer gown, I spent five years dismantling billionaires who thought they were above the law. Let’s look at the shell companies."

For the next twelve hours, ignoring the throbbing pain in her fractured vertebrae and broken ribs, Emily returned to her true element. As a forensic accountant, she didn't see numbers; she saw stories. She saw greed.

By midnight, they found it. A hidden digital labyrinth under the name “Aegis Holdings LLC.” It wasn't just a simple tax shelter. Ethan and Victoria had been siphoning hundreds of millions of dollars out of their family's charitable foundation and moving it into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.

But the biggest shocker was the beneficiary of the new life insurance policy they tried to force Emily to sign. It wasn’t Ethan. It was a private account linked directly to a mysterious entity known only as "The Vanguard Trust."
