Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Decade

The courtroom of the New York Supreme Court was packed to the point of suffocation. Reporters from every major news network sat in the gallery, their cameras focused on the defense table where Isabella Rossi sat, flanked by a team of high-priced defense attorneys.
Isabella looked vastly different from the glamorous socialite in the red dress. She wore a simple, dark-grey linen suit, her hair pulled back into a tight, neat bun, her face devoid of makeup. She looked fragile, her hands shaking as she clutched a glass of water.
At the prosecution’s table sat Marcus Thorne, beside the District Attorney. He was dressed in a sharp, dark suit, his expression neutral, his eyes fixed on the judge.
"Your Honor," the chief defense attorney, Harold Sterling, began, his voice echoing through the courtroom. "We do not dispute that a physical confrontation occurred. However, we contend that Miss Rossi was under severe psychological distress, induced by the high-pressure social environment and targeted verbal abuse from the victim, Khloe Thorne. This was not a premeditated attack; it was a tragic, emotional reaction to a highly charged situation."
The District Attorney stood up, holding a tablet. "Your Honor, the prosecution wishes to enter Exhibit A into the record: the unedited, certified security footage from St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Suite 402."
The courtroom lights dimmed. On the massive projector screens above the jury box, the video began to play.
The silence in the courtroom was absolute as the high-definition footage showed the entire incident. When Isabella’s foot connected with Khloe's abdomen, several members of the jury gasped, one woman covering her eyes in horror. The raw, guttural sound of Khloe’s pain filled the room, amplified by the state-of-the-art speakers.
"As the court can clearly see," the District Attorney said, turning to the jury, "there was no verbal abuse. There was no provocation. The defendant entered the room with the sole intent of terrorizing a pregnant woman. This is not 'psychological distress,' ladies and gentlemen. This is attempted feticide."
The defense attorney tried to object, but the judge overruled him instantly.
Then, the prosecution called its star witness.
"The prosecution calls Khloe Thorne to the stand."
A murmur went through the gallery. The double doors at the back of the courtroom opened, and Khloe was wheeled in by a nurse. She looked pale, her body still recovering from the trauma of the emergency surgery, but her eyes were clear and filled with an unbreakable strength. Marcus stood up immediately, walking over to help her onto the witness stand, his hand resting on her shoulder for a brief, comforting moment before he returned to his seat.
"Mrs. Thorne," the District Attorney said gently. "Can you tell the court what the defendant said to you before she attacked you?"
Khloe looked directly at Isabella, her voice clear and steady. "She told me I was supposed to stay quiet. She said I was supposed to smile for the cameras, give Marcus an heir, and then disappear. She told me I didn't belong in this world, and that she would make sure my baby never saw the light of day."
"And did you provoke her in any way?"
"No," Khloe said, her voice trembling slightly with emotion but remaining strong. "I asked her to leave the room. I was tired, and I wanted to protect my daughter. But she... she didn't want my daughter to live."
Isabella buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking as she began to sob. But the jury’s faces were made of stone. There was no sympathy left in the room for the fallen socialite.
After only three hours of deliberation, the jury returned with a verdict.
"On the charge of first-degree aggravated assault: Guilty."
"On the charge of attempted feticide: Guilty."
"On the charge of reckless endangerment of a minor: Guilty."

The judge looked down at Isabella, his expression severe. "Isabella Rossi, you used your wealth, your privilege, and your family's influence as a license to commit a barbaric act of violence. You showed no mercy to an innocent woman and her unborn child. Therefore, this court shows you no mercy. I sentence you to fifteen years in the state correctional facility, with no possibility of parole for the first ten years."
As the bailiffs led the weeping, hysterical Isabella away in handcuffs, Marcus reached out and took Khloe’s hand. For the first time in months, the heavy, dark cloud that had hung over their lives began to lift.
