Chapter 2 - Code Red in the Operating Room

The red light above the double doors of Operating Room 4 glowed like a drop of fresh blood in the sterile, dimly lit corridor.
Marcus Thorne sat on the hard plastic chairs of the surgical waiting room, his head buried in his hands. The pristine black tuxedo he had worn so proudly at the gala downstairs was now rumpled, the white silk shirt stained with his wife's blood. His mind was a chaotic storm of guilt and fury.
How did I let this happen?
The question tortured him with every tick of the wall clock. For months, Khloe had tried to tell him about Isabella’s subtle cruelties—the whispered comments at dinners, the "accidental" bumps in crowded rooms, the lingering, possessive looks. But Marcus, focused on the massive logistics merger that would secure his family's empire for generations, had brushed it off. He had told her Isabella was just "eccentric" and that they needed to maintain diplomatic relations with the Rossi Group.
Now, his wife was fighting for her life, and his unborn daughter’s heart rate was plummeting, all because of his blind ambition.
The heavy doors of the surgical wing swung open. Dr. Raymond Vance stepped out, his surgical mask hanging loose around his neck. His face was etched with a deep, profound exhaustion, but his eyes were sharp.
Marcus was on his feet in an instant. "Raymond. Tell me she's okay. Please."
Raymond sighed, running a hand through his silver hair. "We stopped the internal bleeding, Marcus. The impact of the heel caused a partial placental abruption. If we had been five minutes later, the baby would have suffocated in the womb."
Marcus felt his knees go weak, the relief washing over him so violently he had to grab the back of the chair to stay upright. "And the baby? Is she... is she alive?"
"She is alive, but she is highly unstable," Raymond said, his voice grave. "We had to perform an emergency cesarean section. Your daughter was born weighing just under three pounds. She is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), hooked up to a ventilator. The next seventy-two hours are critical, Marcus. As for Khloe... we had to put her into a medically induced coma to allow her body to heal from the trauma and the blood loss."
Marcus closed his eyes, a single, heavy tear escaping and tracking down his jaw. "Can I see them?"
"You can see Khloe once she is moved to the ICU," Raymond said. "But first, there are some people downstairs who want to speak with you."
"Who?" Marcus’s voice hardened, the grief instantly sharpening back into anger.
"The police," Raymond replied, his eyes narrowing. "And Victor Rossi’s personal legal team. They’ve already arrived at the main lobby, trying to classify this as a 'private civil matter.' They brought a checkbook, Marcus. They think they can buy their way out of this."
"They think they can buy me?" Marcus let out a cold, humorless laugh that sent a shiver down Raymond’s spine. "They are about to find out exactly how much a Thorne's wrath costs."
Marcus turned and marched toward the elevators, his stride powerful and filled with a terrifying purpose.
When the elevator doors opened into the main lobby of St. Jude's, the scene was chaotic. Several high-ranking police officers stood near the security desk, while a group of men in expensive Italian suits—led by Victor Rossi’s chief counsel, a ruthless attorney named Harold Sterling—argued with the hospital’s security staff.
"Mr. Thorne!" Harold Sterling called out the moment he saw Marcus. He quickly walked over, his face composed in a professional, patronizing expression. "We are deeply sorry about the incident tonight. Miss Rossi was clearly under immense emotional distress. We are prepared to offer a private, unilateral settlement of fifty million dollars, along with a full restructuring of the merger shares in your favor, if we can settle this quietly tonight."
Marcus stopped yards from the attorney. He didn't look at the check Sterling was holding out. He looked at the police chief standing behind him.
"Chief O'Malley," Marcus said, his voice echoing through the marble lobby. "Did your officers secure the crime scene in Suite 402?"
"We did, Mr. Thorne," the Chief replied, stepping forward, ignoring Sterling's glaring looks. "We have also secured the medical records and the initial statement from Dr. Vance."
"Excellent," Marcus said. He turned his gaze back to Harold Sterling. "Take your fifty million dollars, Sterling, and tell Victor Rossi to use it to buy his daughter the best defense attorney in the country. Because tomorrow morning, I am filing charges for attempted feticide, first-degree aggravated assault, and domestic terrorism."

"Mr. Thorne, be reasonable!" Sterling hissed, his professional mask slipping. "A trial will ruin the merger! The Rossi Group will pull all its assets! The Thorne Group's stock will plunge!"
"Let it plunge," Marcus said, his eyes burning with a dark, absolute certainty. "I will burn my own empire to the ground if it means I get to watch Isabella Rossi rot in a cell. Officers, arrest her."
