Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Matriarch

The Intensive Care Unit of St. Jude's was quiet, the only sound being the rhythmic, mechanical whoosh of the ventilator keeping Khloe alive.
Marcus sat by her bedside, his thumb gently tracing the back of her hand. Her skin was starting to regain its color, but the sight of the IV lines and the monitors made his chest ache with a physical pain.
The door to the private room opened quietly.
Marcus didn't turn around, expecting it to be Dr. Vance or one of the nurses. But the scent of expensive French perfume—a scent he had known his entire life—filled the sterile room.
His mother, Victoria Thorne, stepped inside. She was dressed in a flawless navy Chanel suit, her pearls perfectly arranged, her expression composed in a mask of elegant concern.
"Marcus, darling," Victoria murmured, walking over to place a hand on his shoulder. "I came as soon as I could. I was in Paris for the fashion week when the news broke."
Marcus shrugged her hand off, his voice cold. "I'm surprised you came at all, Mother. I figured you'd be busy trying to manage the PR disaster with the Rossi family."
Victoria sighed, sitting in the armchair opposite the bed. "Marcus, let's not be adversarial. What Isabella did was barbaric, of course. I was deeply shocked. But we must think of the future. The Thorne family name is being dragged through the dirt. The tabloids are digging into your marriage, calling Khloe a victim of our family's social climbing."
"She is a victim, Mother," Marcus said, finally turning to look at her. His eyes were dead, devoid of any warmth. "She was attacked by the woman you tried to force me to marry for three years. The woman you invited to our anniversary dinner last month. The woman you assured me was 'harmless' and 'highly refined.'"
Victoria’s expression hardened slightly. "Isabella was a suitable match on paper, Marcus. How was I to know she had this... this latent instability? But destroying the Rossi Group won't bring Khloe back to health any faster. If you force Victor Rossi into bankruptcy, you will destabilize the entire market. The board is talking about a vote of no confidence if you don't halt the aggressive buyouts."
"Let them vote," Marcus said, leaning forward. "Because the moment they do, I will release the records of the offshore accounts you've been using to fund Isabella’s private lifestyle for the past year."
Victoria froze, her breath catching in her throat. "What did you say?"
"You heard me, Mother," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Do you think I didn't find out? You were the one who gave Isabella the security code to the VIP wing of this hospital. You wanted her to confront Khloe. You wanted her to convince Khloe to leave me so you could have your perfect socialite daughter-in-law."
"That's a lie!" Victoria hissed, her elegant composure completely fracturing. "I only wanted what was best for the family! I didn't know she would hurt her!"
"You didn't care if she got hurt, as long as you got what you wanted," Marcus said, standing up and pointing toward the door. "You are no longer my mother, Victoria. You are stripped of your board seat, your trust fund is frozen, and if I ever see your face near my wife or my daughter again, I will have Raymond release the security footage of you handing Isabella that access keycard. Now, get out."

Victoria stared at her son, realizing she had lost all leverage. The boy she had manipulated and groomed to be the face of the Thorne dynasty had grown into a man who would gladly tear down the entire empire to protect the woman he loved.
She stood up, her jaw clenched, and walked out of the room, her high heels clicking loudly in the quiet corridor.
