Chapter 5 - The Courtroom Battle

The Final StandThe divorce proceeding was held in the Collin County Family Court three months later.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, local socialites, and several of Daniel's former corporate colleagues who wanted to witness the final fall of the golden boy.
Daniel sat at the defense table, looking like a ghost of his former self. He had lost weight, his expensive suits hung loosely on his frame, and his dark hair was peppered with grey. His high-priced defense attorney, Richard Sterling (no relation to Alex Sterling), sat beside him, looking increasingly exhausted as he reviewed the mountain of evidence against his client.
At the prosecution table, I sat beside Evelyn Vance. I wore a tailored white trouser suit, my hair styled in soft, elegant waves. On my lap, I held baby Leo, who was now three months old, his chubby cheeks glowing with health. Lily sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Claire's hand, her eyes focused on me with a quiet, fierce pride.
"Your Honor," Daniel's attorney stood up, trying to launch a final, desperate defense. "My client acknowledges that his marriage has suffered an irretrievable breakdown. However, the Plano property was purchased during the marriage. Under Texas community property law, my client is entitled to fifty percent of the home's equity, regardless of the pending criminal charges."
Evelyn Vance stood up, her silver hair catching the courtroom lights.
"Your Honor, we have submitted the certified tracing records for the down payment of the Plano home," Evelyn said, her voice echoing through the courtroom.
"Every single dollar of the $500,000 down payment came from the inheritance of Madison’s late mother, Evelyn Blake. Daniel Blake did not contribute a single cent. Furthermore, we have submitted forensic evidence proving that Daniel Blake systematically embezzled $150,000 from their joint savings account to fund his affair with Vanessa Ramos."
She paused, looking directly at Daniel, who couldn't even meet her gaze.
"We ask for a disproportionate division of the marital estate due to the defendant's egregious fraud, forgery, and physical and emotional abandonment of his wife during her childbirth," Evelyn concluded.
The Judge's VerdictJudge Sarah Henderson, a veteran family law judge known for her no-nonsense attitude, reviewed the documents on her bench for several long, silent minutes. When she finally looked up, her expression was carved from granite.
"Mr. Blake," Judge Henderson said, her voice dropping like a gavel. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely seen a display of such calculated, cold-hearted betrayal. To forge your wife's signature on a property deed while she was in a hospital bed delivering your son is not merely illegal; it is morally bankrupt."
She turned her gaze to the decree.
"The court rules as follows: The Plano property is awarded entirely to Madison Blake as her sole and separate property. All joint savings accounts, investments, and assets are awarded to Madison Blake. Daniel Blake is ordered to pay $4,500 a month in child support for Lily and Leo, as well as lifetime alimony of $3,000 a month."
"And as for custody," Judge Henderson continued, "Daniel Blake’s visitation rights are suspended indefinitely until his pending criminal trial for corporate embezzlement and bank fraud is resolved. He is barred from coming within five hundred feet of Madison Blake, her children, or their home."
The gallery erupted into a flurry of whispers and applause.

Daniel slumped back in his chair, his head in his hands, his body shaking with silent, dry sobs. He had wanted room to "reorganize everything."
Now, he had nothing left.
