Chapter 2 - The Silent Retaliation

The Executive SuiteThe next morning, the discharge process went exactly as Daniel had planned. He hovered over the nurses, signed the paperwork with his signature gold-plated pen, and escorted us to his luxury SUV with the practiced grace of a perfect family man.

"To the Westin," Daniel announced happily as he started the engine. "A week of room service, white-glove treatment, and total relaxation for my beautiful wife."

"It sounds wonderful, Daniel," I said from the passenger seat, wearing my oversized sunglasses to hide the cold, calculating expression in my eyes.

In the backseat, Lily held baby Leo’s car seat, her eyes glued to the window. She didn't say a word. She knew her role. We were playing the part of the compliant, unsuspecting family, allowing Daniel to believe he was the master of our destiny.

When we arrived at the Westin Stonebriar, the suite was indeed spectacular. It was a high-level executive room overlooking the manicured golf course, complete with a modern kitchen, plush white carpets, and a separate bedroom for Lily.

"I have to head into the office for a few hours," Daniel said, placing our bags on the luggage rack and checking his watch. "Some end-of-quarter reports need my signature. Will you be okay here for a bit, Maddy?"

"We'll be perfectly fine," I smiled, walking over to adjust his collar. "Take your time, Daniel. Work is important. Especially now that we have a new mouth to feed."

"That's my girl," he beamed, kissing my cheek. "I’ll call you around six."

The moment the heavy suite door clicked shut behind him, the smile vanished from my face. I turned to Claire, who was already waiting in the hotel corridor, having checked into a room two floors below us under her married name.

"Is the lawyer ready?" I asked as Claire walked into the suite.

"Evelyn Vance is waiting for us in her office in Uptown Dallas," Claire said, pulling a pair of keys from her purse. "I'll watch Lily and Leo. Go, Madison. Reclaim what is yours."

The Viper of UptownEvelyn Vance was a legend in the Texas family law circuit. She was a sharp, sixty-year-old woman with silver hair cropped into a fierce pixie cut, wearing a tailored cream Chanel suit and eyes that had dismantled some of the most powerful men in Dallas.

When I walked into her office, she didn't offer me tea or platitudes. She simply pointed to the leather chair across from her desk.

"Your sister sent me the recording and the digital copies of the forged deed," Evelyn said, tapping her manicured finger against a thick manila folder. "Madison, your husband has committed felony bank fraud, forgery, and grand larceny. If we file a police report today, he will be in handcuffs by dinner."

"No," I said, my voice quiet but absolute.

Evelyn paused, her sharp eyes narrowing. "No? He is trying to steal your ancestral home and your children's future with his mistress, Madison. Why would you protect him?"

"I’m not protecting him," I replied, leaning forward.

"If we arrest him today, he’ll hire a high-priced defense attorney, post bail in two hours, and tie up our assets in a messy criminal trial for the next three years. He will use his corporate resources to paint me as an unstable, postpartum mother who fabricated the story out of jealousy. I don't want him in jail yet. I want him ruined. I want him to lose his job, his reputation, his money, and his mistress before he even realizes I've hired a lawyer."

A slow, terrifyingly brilliant smile spread across Evelyn’s face. She leaned back in her chair, clasping her hands together.

"I like you, Madison," Evelyn murmured. "Most wives in your position want to scream. You want to execute. Tell me, what is your plan?"

"The cash-offer agreement from V.R. Estates Holdings is set to be signed tomorrow night at 7:00 PM," I explained, pulling out my phone. "Daniel has arranged a 'private celebration dinner' at our Plano home with Vanessa and the property consultant to finalize the transfer. He thinks I’m safely locked away at the Westin."

"And what do you want to happen at 7:00 PM tomorrow?" Evelyn asked.

"I want to host a party," I said. "And I want to invite Daniel's corporate superiors, the bank's fraud division, and the local police. I want the house to confess everything."
