Chapter 3 - Confrontation at the Masterpiece

The Uninvited GuestsThe Plano home was glowing with warm, golden light when Daniel’s black SUV pulled into the driveway at 6:30 PM the following evening.

Inside the house, Vanessa Ramos was already busy. She had set up a beautiful catering spread on our marble kitchen island—expensive sushi, imported champagne, and a sleek leather folder containing the final closing documents for the Plano property. She wore a stunning emerald-green dress that screamed confidence, her dark hair pinned back with a diamond clip.

"Did you double-check the hotel room?" Vanessa asked as Daniel walked through the front door, loosening his tie.

"Maddy is completely asleep," Daniel smiled, wrapping his arms around her waist and kissing her neck. "Between the newborn keeping her up and the mild sedative I slipped into her herbal tea this afternoon, she won't be waking up until tomorrow morning. She thinks I’m attending a corporate dinner."

"Perfect," Vanessa purred, pulling the documents out of the folder. "The notary is arriving in fifteen minutes. Once your forged signature is matched with my corporate stamp, the title transfers to V.R. Estates. By Monday, the house goes on the open market for $1.8 million. We’ll clear a cool $800,000 after taxes, Daniel. Enough to secure our condo in Uptown."

"To our new beginning," Daniel said, raising a glass of champagne.

"To your new beginning," a calm, clear voice echoed from the formal dining room.

Daniel froze. The champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor.

Vanessa spun around, her face turning a pale, ghostly white.

Madison walked out of the shadows of the dining room. I was wearing the elegant navy-blue silk dress I had bought for our anniversary—the one Daniel had told me was "too formal" for our quiet life. Behind me walked Claire, holding a digital video camera, and Evelyn Vance, who carried a thick stack of legal briefs.

"Madison..." Daniel stammered, his voice cracking as his brain desperately tried to calculate how I had escaped the hotel. "What... what are you doing here? You should be resting at the hotel. The dust—"

"The dust is fine, Daniel," I said, walking over to the kitchen island. I looked down at the catering spread, then at the champagne spilling across my floor. "But your timing is terrible. We have guests arriving."

As if on cue, the heavy front door of the Plano house opened.

The Corporate FalloutArthur Pendelton, the sixty-year-old CEO of Sterling & Croft Global—the investment firm where Daniel worked as a senior executive—walked into the foyer. Beside him were two members of the firm's internal ethics board, accompanied by two uniform Plano police officers and a forensic accountant from Chase Bank.

"Daniel?" Arthur Pendelton said, his voice deep and heavy with disappointment. "What is the meaning of this?"

"Arthur!" Daniel gasped, his face draining of all color. He stepped away from Vanessa as if she were radioactive. "This... this is a misunderstanding. My wife is having a postpartum episode. She’s unstable—"

"Mr. Blake," Evelyn Vance interrupted, her voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel. "At 4:00 PM today, we submitted a formal criminal complaint to the Dallas County District Attorney’s office. We have forensic handwriting analysis proving you forged your wife’s signature on the property transfer documents. We also have a digital recording from your daughter's tablet detailing your conspiracy to commit bank fraud and grand larceny with Ms. Ramos."

"You recorded me?" Daniel hissed, his eyes darting toward me with a sudden, vicious rage. "You bitch—"

"Watch your mouth, Mr. Blake," the police officer warned, stepping forward and placing his hand on his holster.

"Arthur, please," Daniel begged, turning back to his CEO. "This is a private family matter. My performance at the firm—"

"Your performance at the firm is over, Daniel," Arthur Pendelton said coldly. "We’ve been running an internal audit on your department for the last three weeks. We discovered that you’ve been routing corporate development funds into a shell company registered under V.R. Estates. You and Ms. Ramos have been embezzling from our clients to fund your personal real estate speculations."

Vanessa gasped, her hands shaking as she grabbed her designer purse. "I didn't know! Arthur, I swear, Daniel told me the funds were pre-approved—"

"Save it for the grand jury, Vanessa," the female officer said, stepping forward and pulling a pair of handcuffs from her belt. "Vanessa Ramos, Daniel Blake, you are under arrest for grand larceny, forgery, and corporate embezzlement. Hands behind your backs, now."
