Chapter 2: The Assessment of Ruin

The heavy doors clicked shut, plunging the room back into a quiet sanctuary. Audrey let out a shaky breath, the adrenaline finally leaving her system. She looked through the glass at Liam and Chloe. They were so small, but in that moment, they looked like the strongest beings in the universe to her.
"Dr. Aris," Arthur said, turning to the Chief of Surgery. "What is the status of my great-grandchildren?"
Dr. Aris stepped forward warmly, his expression full of reassurance. "Born at twenty-nine weeks, Ms. Vance. They are fighters. Liam is currently responding beautifully to the surfactant therapy for his lungs, and Chloe’s vitals have stabilized significantly over the last three hours. They will need to stay in the NICU for at least another six to eight weeks, but with our level-four neonatal team, we expect a full, thriving recovery."
Audrey closed her eyes, a massive weight lifting off her chest. "Thank you, Doctor. Please... spare no expense. Use whatever they need."
"The Vance family owns the wing, Audrey," Arthur said gently, kissing her forehead. "They have the best care humanly possible. Now, let’s talk about the garbage we just swept out."
Marcus Stone opened a sleek leather briefcase. "Ms. Vance, while you were recovering, our intelligence team did a preliminary sweep of Dominic’s activities over the past eighteen months. It appears he has been systematically siphoning funds from the modest trust your grandfather gave you—about $200,000—and using it to fund his struggling company, Apex Medical Labs, as well as purchasing a luxury penthouse condo under Natalie’s name."
Audrey grimaced. "He told me the market was down and my trust payouts were delayed. I trusted him blindly because I wanted my children to have a father who felt successful."
"He didn't just steal from you, Audrey," Arthur growled, his eyes flashing with old corporate savagery. "He insulted the Vance bloodline. He thought he could leave you with nothing. Marcus, what is the status of Apex Medical?"
"Apex Medical relies entirely on a distribution contract with Vanguard Logistics, a tier-three subsidiary of Vance Global," Marcus replied with a cold, professional smile. "Without that contract, they cannot ship a single syringe or bandage. They will be in default of all their commercial loans within thirty days."
"Cancel it," Arthur ordered without a second thought. "In fact, buy out their primary creditors. I want every single dime of Dominic’s debt transferred to our desk by tomorrow morning. When we crush him, I want him to owe us directly."
Audrey looked at her grandfather. Three years ago, she had hidden her true identity because she wanted to find someone who loved her for her, not her family’s staggering wealth. She had taken a fake last name, lived in a modest apartment, and tried to build a normal life. It had been a beautiful dream that turned into a horrific nightmare.

"Grandfather," Audrey said, her grip tightening on his hand. "Don't just crush his business. I want him to watch everything he stole from me dissolve in his hands. I want him to see what happens when the 'nobody' he abandoned turns out to be the person who holds his entire world in her palm."
Arthur smiled, a terrifyingly proud glint in his old eyes. "That’s my girl. Marcus, initiate Plan Alpha. Let’s show this boy what real power looks like."
