Chapter 5 - The Audit of the Vultures

The following morning, the sun rose over Newport in a blaze of brilliant autumn gold, burning away the remnants of the storm and leaving the Atlantic looking like a sheet of hammered blue steel.

Inside the executive boardroom on the top floor of West Tower in downtown Providence, twenty-two members of the board of directors sat in dead silence.

Robert West sat at the far end of the long mahogany table, flanked by two federal marshals. His corporate attorneys sat beside him, nervously shuffling papers they knew wouldn't save him.

Julian walked into the room wearing a crisp charcoal suit, his posture straight, carrying a thick leather briefcase. Beside him walked Anna Vance—now officially retained as executive legal liaison—holding an encrypted digital tablet.

"Mr. West," Robert’s lead attorney stammered, standing up. "My client is prepared to negotiate a quiet settlement regarding the disputed foundation accounts—"

"There is nothing to negotiate," Julian interrupted, setting his briefcase on the table with a sharp, echoing thud.

He sat down at the head of the table, opening the case.

"Last night, federal investigators executed a search warrant on Robert’s private Swiss banking accounts," Julian said calmly, looking around the room at the pale faces of the board members who had stayed silent while corruption ate away at his family. "They found thirty-four million dollars diverted from the West Foundation over a period of six years."

Robert slumped back in his chair, his hands trembling. "You can't prove I authorized those wire transfers without my signature codes."

Anna stepped forward, plugging her tablet directly into the boardroom’s massive sixty-inch presentation screen.

"You didn't need your signature codes after Clara died, Mr. West," Anna said, her voice ringing out clear and sharp across the silent room. "Because you used Clara’s personal biometric keycard—which you stole from her bedside table the night she passed away—to authorize every single offshore transfer."

The screen flickered, displaying high-definition security camera footage from the east wing hallway, dated three days after Clara’s funeral, showing Robert unlocking the private terminal with Clara’s keycard.

A collective gasp echoed through the board.

"Federal marshals have already seized all domestic and international accounts associated with Robert West and Vivian Hale," Julian announced, standing up from his chair. "Furthermore, every board member who voted to restrict access to the east wing or approved suspicious foundation audits without review is hereby terminated for gross negligence."

He looked directly at his uncle.

"You wanted my empire, Uncle Robert?" Julian said quietly. "Enjoy it from a federal penitentiary cell."

As federal marshals stepped behind Robert and lifted him out of his chair, the disgraced executive looked like an old, broken man stripped of every illusion of power he had ever worshiped.
