Chapter 1 - The Sealed Door

The heavy silence inside the Newport seaside hotel’s grand ballroom felt thick enough to suffocate.
Julian West stood frozen on the polished marble floor, his tuxedo jacket suddenly feeling like a lead vest. Seven-year-old Sophie still gripped Anna’s black uniform sleeve, her small knuckles white with desperate tension. Across the room, beneath the glittering cascade of crystal chandeliers, Vivian Hale’s perfect poise had fractured. Her hands, resting lightly on the ivory linen tablecloth, trembled ever so slightly before she forced them flat.
"Julian," Vivian said, her voice carrying a manufactured sweetness that scraped against the quiet like sandpaper. "This is unseemly. The child is having a night terror. We shouldn't let her disruptive imagination hijack your engagement celebration."
Julian didn't answer her. He couldn't. His gaze remained locked on Anna.
The young waitress stood trembling, her head bowed, her black-and-white uniform looking entirely out of place amid the sea of silk and tailored wool. She was barely twenty-three, with haunted dark eyes and a faint scar running along her jawline—a face Julian realized with sudden, sickening horror he had seen every morning when he reviewed the estate’s daily staff rosters, yet had never truly looked at.
"Anna," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register that made several nearby senators step back. "Look at me."
Anna lifted her chin, tears spilling over her lashes, but her jaw set with a stubborn, fierce pride. "Mr. West. I’m just a server. I was assigned to Section Four."
"Sections don't walk into the east wing of my estate at midnight," Julian shot back, stepping closer. "Sections don't comfort my daughter when she cries."
"Julian, please!" Vivian hurried across the marble, her gold satin gown swishing like autumn leaves. She reached out to place a manicured hand on his arm, her eyes flashing with masked panic. "Robert is handling security. Let’s take Sophie upstairs to her suite. You’re making a scene in front of the entire county."
"The east wing has been locked for four years, Vivian," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He shrugged off her hand as if it burned him. "Ever since Clara passed away. Robert told me the keys were lost, and the hallway was boarded up to protect Sophie from traumatic memories."
He turned back to his daughter, kneeling down on the cold stone so their eyes were level.
"Sophie," Julian whispered, his fingers gently touching her shoulder. "Tell Daddy. How does Anna get into the nursery?"
Sophie sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her sleeve. "She doesn't use the door, Daddy. She uses the secret stairs behind the wardrobe in Mommy's closet. She brings me crackers and water when my tummy hurts because the bad lady gives me bitter juice."
The ballroom temperature seemed to drop twenty degrees.
"Bitter juice?" Julian repeated, his blood turning to ice water.
Before Sophie could answer, a commotion broke out near the service doors.
Robert West, Julian’s uncle and the longtime managing director of the West estate, pushed his way through the crowd of stunned guests. His silver hair was disheveled, and his face was drained of all color.
"Julian," Robert barked, his voice cracking. "Stop listening to a hysterical child. The girl has been sneaking into the kitchens at night; she’s obviously confused and impressionable. Security, remove this waitress from the premises immediately!"
Two burly private security guards in black suits stepped forward, reaching for Anna’s arms.
"Don't you touch her!" Sophie screamed, throwing herself in front of Anna like a shield.
Julian stood up slowly. He didn't look at his uncle. He didn't look at Vivian. He looked at the two guards, and the raw, terrifying authority of a West family patriarch flared in his eyes.
"If anyone lays a finger on Anna," Julian said softly, the silence in the room swallowing his words whole, "I will personally strip them of every cent, every title, and every asset they hold in this state. Stand back."
The guards stopped dead in their tracks.

Julian pulled a heavy silver keyring from his inner jacket pocket—the master set that supposedly only unlocked the active living quarters of the estate.
"We are going home," Julian announced to the stunned ballroom, picking Sophie up into his arms. He looked straight at Vivian, whose face had gone chalk white. "All of us. And tonight, we are going to open the east wing."
