Chapter 4 - The Cliffside Confrontation

The rain lashed horizontally across the windshield of Julian’s range rover as he careened down the winding coastal road toward the private airstrip at Westerly.

Ahead of him, the red taillights of the black Mercedes cut through the blinding sheets of water like two angry eyes. The driver was pushing the luxury sedan far beyond safe limits, fishtailing on the slick asphalt as the road narrowed near the jagged granite cliffs overlooking the Atlantic.

Julian slammed his foot down on the accelerator, closing the distance between them until his front bumper was mere inches from the Mercedes’ rear quarter panel.

Bang!

He swerved, clipping the rear bumper and forcing the Mercedes into a violent spin that sent it crashing hard against the rusted chain-link fence of the private airfield. The sedan's engine died instantly, steam billowing from under the crumpled hood.

Julian threw his door open, stepping out into the howling wind and rain.

He marched across the mud, grabbed the driver's side door handle of the wrecked Mercedes, and yanked it open with a deafening screech of stressed metal.

Vivian Hale sat inside, her gold satin gown torn and stained with mud, her hair plastered across her face. Her makeup had run in dark streaks down her cheeks, destroying the immaculate illusion she had spent years constructing.

"Get out," Julian said. His voice wasn't loud. It was terrifyingly flat.

Vivian shrank back against the passenger seat, raising her hands defensively. "Julian! Listen to me! It was all Robert! He orchestrated the finances! I was just—I was just along for the ride!"

"You poisoned my wife," Julian said, grabbing her by the collar of her ruined dress and hauling her out of the car onto the wet asphalt. "You terrorized my daughter. You turned my home into a prison."

"Clara was weak!" Vivian screamed hysterically, her mask of civility finally shattering completely as the wind whipped her hair around her face. "She didn't belong in this world! She wanted to give everything away to charities! We saved the West empire, Julian! We saved your legacy!"

"My legacy was my family," Julian whispered.

Before Vivian could reply, the flashing blue lights of three state trooper cruisers crested the hill behind them, sirens wailing over the roar of the ocean waves below.

Officer Miller stepped out of the lead cruiser, holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.

"Vivian Hale," Officer Miller announced over the storm, stepping up to the wrecked car. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, financial fraud, and the unlawful administration of controlled substances resulting in wrongful death."

As the cold steel clicked around Vivian’s wrists, she glared at Julian with pure, venomous hatred.

"You think you won?" she hissed as troopers shoved her into the back of the cruiser. "Check your company accounts tomorrow morning, Julian. Robert already transferred every liquid asset out of the country. You're a bankrupt pauper standing in the rain."

Julian watched the cruiser doors slam shut. He didn't feel panic. He didn't feel despair.

He felt entirely, beautifully clear.
