Chapter 5 - The Fortress of Justice

By midnight, the storm over Chicago had turned into a torrential downpour.

Inside the secure library of Jonathan Mercer’s private estate in Lake Forest—a heavily guarded fortress surrounded by stone walls and security gates—Lila, Sam, and Jonathan sat around a wide oak table.

Lila’s mother, Mary Hart—now fifty-two, healthy, her eyes filled with gentle grace—sat in a comfortable armchair near the fireplace, holding a cup of warm tea. She watched Jonathan with tears of deep gratitude in her eyes.

"I remember your voice, Mr. Mercer," Mary said softly, looking across the room at the man who had paid for her hospital care fifteen years ago through an anonymous fund. "When I was in that hospital bed at County, terrified I would lose my children to the state system, the social worker came in and told me everything was taken care of. I prayed for you every night."

Jonathan smiled gently, a rare warmth softening his hard features. "Your daughter did all the work, Mrs. Hart. She wrote me a promissory note that was worth more than any stock portfolio I’ve ever owned."

Sam walked over to the table, opening his laptop. "Victor Vance controls eighty percent of the emergency medical transport contracts in Cook County," Sam explained, showing the network diagrams. "His company, Apex Medical Logistics, inflates transit fees for low-income patients, forcing them into debt collection. That’s why our mother was facing eviction fifteen years ago."

Lila stood beside Jonathan, looking at the screen.

"Vance thinks he’s invisible because his shell companies are buried behind three layers of medical privacy laws," Lila said, her eyes flashing with razor-sharp determination. "He threatened my family because he knows I’m forty-eight hours away from serving a master federal freeze on Apex Logistics."

Jonathan picked up his glass of water, his expression turning into one of absolute, lethal strategy.

"He tried to play street games with you, Lila," Jonathan said quietly. "He forgot that I built Brooks-Mercer's original distribution network by acquiring regional logistics fleets. I know every board member on Apex’s parent company personally."

Jonathan turned to his security chief, Marcus, standing near the door.

"Call the Chairman of the Illinois State Medical Licensing Board," Jonathan ordered smoothly. "Tell him I’m exercising my personal buy-back option on the Apex logistics debt bonds. By three o'clock tomorrow afternoon, Brooks-Mercer Industries will own seventy percent of Victor Vance's operating capital."

Lila looked at Jonathan, a soft smile appearing on her face. "You're going to buy his debt?"

"You fought him with the law, Lila," Jonathan replied, his grey eyes shining with unshakeable pride. "I’m going to buy his foundation out from under his feet. By tomorrow night, Victor Vance won't have enough money left to pay his private security guards, let alone threaten my family."
