Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Hospital

Three weeks after the public collapse of Vanguard Capital and the full restoration of Brooks-Mercer Industries, a new threat emerged from an unexpected corner.

While Croft was locked in a federal detention center facing twenty years in prison, his silent partner—a ruthless billionaire healthcare hedge-fund manager named Victor Vance (no relation to Agent Vance)—realized that Lila Hart’s ongoing federal audit was heading straight toward his own empire.

Victor Vance controlled a network of private medical billing companies that had been systematically overcharging public hospitals across Illinois for over a decade—including County Hospital, where Lila’s mother had been treated fifteen years ago.

On a rainy Tuesday evening, Lila was working late in her private office at the Federal Building in downtown Chicago when her phone rang.

It was Sam.

"Lila," Sam’s voice sounded tight, controlled, but laced with underlying tension. "Are you still at the office?"

Lila leaned back in her chair, rubbing her eyes. "Yes, Sam. Just finishing the final evidence binder for the grand jury. What's wrong? You sound strange."

"I'm at Northwestern," Sam said slowly. "A man just came to the orthopedic department. He asked for me by name. He didn't ask for a consultation, Lila. He left an envelope on my desk and told me to remind my sister that 'ambulances break down easily on rainy nights.'"

Lila stood up instantly, her fatigue vanishing, replaced by pure ice in her veins. "Did you touch the envelope?"

"No," Sam replied. "I called hospital security immediately. But Lila... he knew Mom’s current address in Milwaukee. He knew where she goes for her physical therapy."

Lila grabbed her coat and keys from her desk. "Stay right where you are, Sam. I’m calling federal security."

As she stepped out of her office into the quiet, dimly lit corridor of the Federal Building, her phone chimed with a text message from an unknown number:

Drop the County Hospital billing audit by 9:00 AM tomorrow, Dr. Hart. Or your family will learn how cold Chicago can be when no one is around to buy you milk.

Lila held her phone tightly, her knuckles turning white.

They thought they could intimidate her. They thought because she was once a hungry ten-year-old girl sitting on an overturned milk crate, she was fragile. They didn't understand that surviving a Chicago winter on the sidewalk didn't make a child weak—it made her unbreakable.

She tapped a contact on her phone and dialed.

"Jonathan," Lila said when he answered on the first ring. "We have a secondary target. Victor Vance just threatened my family."

Over the line, Jonathan Mercer’s voice dropped into a terrifying, icy silence that carried thirty years of unyielding power.

"Where are you right now, Lila?" Jonathan asked.

"In the lobby of the Federal Building."

"Stay inside," Jonathan commanded. "My private security team is outside your doors in sixty seconds. And tell your brother I’m picking up your mother in Milwaukee myself."
