Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Execution

At 8:45 AM the following morning, the atmosphere inside the main auditorium of the Chicago Stock Exchange was suffocating.
Over fifty journalists, financial analysts, and corporate board members had gathered for Vanguard Capital’s emergency press conference. Richard Croft stood at the center of the stage behind a row of microphones, surrounded by three junior partners and a legal team holding press releases announcing the forced liquidation of Brooks-Mercer Industries.
Croft adjusted his red tie, grinning at the television cameras.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Croft announced into the microphones, his voice echoing through the hall. "Today marks a historic transition in Midwest logistics. Brooks-Mercer Industries, after years of financial mismanagement under its former CEO, Jonathan Mercer, has formally defaulted on its primary obligations. Vanguard Capital will immediately assume operational control—"
CLACK. CLACK. CLACK.
The heavy double oak doors at the back of the auditorium swung open with a loud bang.
The entire room turned.
Walking down the center aisle was Jonathan Mercer, wearing an immaculate black three-piece suit, his posture straight, his eyes burning with cold power.
Beside him walked Lila Hart, her federal badge pinned visibly to her dark navy blazer, flanked by four federal agents wearing dark suits and carrying sealed silver cases.
The journalists immediately began snapping photos, flashbulbs exploding across the auditorium like strobe lights!
"What is the meaning of this?" Croft snapped into the microphone, his smile instantly souring. "Security, remove these people! Jonathan, you have no standing in this venue! You were ousted three hours ago!"
Lila stepped directly up to the stage steps, pulling an official federal document from her folder. She didn't raise her voice, but the crystal-clear authority in her tone commanded the entire auditorium.
"Richard Croft," Lila spoke, her voice carrying over the house speakers. "I am Dr. Lila Hart, Chief Investigator for the Securities and Exchange Commission. Stand down from that podium immediately."
Croft’s face turned bright red. "This is an outrage! You can't interrupt a private corporate announcement!"
"This isn't a corporate announcement, Mr. Croft," Lila replied calmly, stepping onto the stage as two federal marshals moved into position behind Croft’s legal team. "This is the execution of a Federal Emergency Warrant under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act."
A collective gasp swept through the gallery! Journalists began frantically typing on their laptops!
"You're insane!" Croft shouted, sweating profusely under the stage lights. "On what grounds?"
Lila pressed a remote control in her hand. Behind Croft, the massive fifty-foot digital screen on the auditorium wall flickered, instantly replacing the Vanguard logo with a series of decrypted internal emails, bank transfer receipts, and recorded phone transcripts.
AUDIO PLAYBACK FROM EXHIBIT A:
"Make sure the quarterly shipping audit for Brooks-Mercer is delayed by six weeks," Croft’s voice boomed through the hall speakers. "Once the stock drops below twelve dollars, execute the short positions through the Zurich shell. Mercer won't realize what hit him until we own the deed."
The room erupted into absolute chaos! Photographers surged forward, shouting questions!
Croft took two steps backward, his face completely pale, his eyes wide with sheer terror as he stared at the screen showing his private bank account routing numbers.
"That... that audio is a fabrication!" Croft stammered, looking around desperately for his legal team—who were already quietly packing their briefcases and stepping away from him.
"The encryption keys were provided to federal authorities two hours ago by your former Chief Financial Officer," Lila stated coldly. "He entered a full confession under a plea agreement at six o'clock this morning."
Special Agent Vance stepped up behind Croft, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Richard Croft, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, securities manipulation, corporate extortion, and illegal conspiracy," Agent Vance announced, turning Croft around and snapping the cuffs shut over his wrists.
As Croft was led down the aisle in front of dozens of flashing cameras, he passed Jonathan Mercer, who stood motionless, watching him with quiet, absolute victory.
Croft stopped for a fraction of a second, his voice shaking with pathetic rage. "Who... who are you?" he hissed at Lila. "How did you find those offshore accounts?"

Lila looked down at him with cool, magnificent disdain.
"I’m the girl who pays her debts, Mr. Croft," Lila whispered. "Take him away."
