Chapter 5 - The Hunter Becomes the Hunted

The Shadow in the HallwayThe corridors of the Westlake estate were silent, save for the rhythmic drumming of the rain against the roof.

Alex stood in the shadow of the grand staircase, his back pressed against the wood paneling. He had turned off his flashlight, relying entirely on his night-vision scope. He could hear the soft, rhythmic breathing of two men moving through the foyer below.

They wore black tactical gear, their faces covered, their weapons suppressed. They were moving with a professional precision that suggested military or mercenary training.

"Target is on the second floor," one of the intruders whispered into his comms. "Secure the girl. Eliminate the father if he interferes."

"Not tonight," Alex whispered to himself.

He stepped out of the shadow, raised his weapon, and fired two rapid, precise shots. The first intruder collapsed onto the marble floor with a heavy thud, neutralized instantly by a non-lethal shot to the shoulder.

The second intruder spun around, returning fire. The suppressed rounds hissed through the air, splintering the wooden banister near Alex's head. Alex dove behind a marble pillar, reloading his weapon in a fluid, practiced motion.

Downstairs, Marcus and his team entered the foyer through the side entrance, their tactical lights cutting through the darkness. A brief, intense firefight ensued, ending with the second intruder being pinned to the floor by three of Alex’s security guards.

"Clear!" Marcus shouted, his flashlight beam scanning the room. "We have them, boss."

The Confession of the ViperAlex walked down the stairs, his weapon still raised as he stood over the wounded intruder on the floor. He knelt down, ripping the black mask off the man’s face. It was a rugged, scarred face he didn't recognize.

"Who sent you?" Alex asked, his voice colder than the rain outside.

The man spat blood onto the floor, refusing to speak.

Alex didn't hesitate. He pressed the hot barrel of his gun directly against the man's wounded shoulder, applying slow, agonizing pressure. The man groaned, his jaw clenching as sweat poured down his face.

"I won't ask twice," Alex said softly. "Who sent you?"

"V-Vance..." the man gasped out, his eyes wide with pain. "Richard Vance. He was hired by Hector Robles. They wanted to take the girl... to stop her from testifying."

Alex stood up, his face entirely devoid of color. He looked at Marcus.

"Where is Richard Vance?"

"He’s at his private club in downtown Dallas, boss," Marcus replied, checking his phone. "Our trackers have been monitoring him since he met with Hector this afternoon."

Alex walked to the front door, grabbing his cashmere overcoat from the rack. "Marcus, call the District Attorney. Tell him we have a confession linking Hector Robles to a commercial kidnapping and attempted murder conspiracy. And tell him to prepare another warrant."

"And where are you going, Alex?" Elena asked, running down the stairs and looking at him with deep worry in her eyes.

Alex paused by the door, turning to look at his ex-wife and his daughter, who was standing safely behind her. For the first time in ten years, he saw a look of pure, unadulterated trust in Elena’s eyes.

"I am going to end this," Alex said. "Once and for all."
