Chapter 2 - The Legal Guillotine

The Unraveling of the Robles DynastyBy 9:00 AM, the city of Dallas was waking up to a corporate earthquake.

The news of the Sterling Group terminating its multi-million dollar legal contract with Harrison & Croft sent shockwaves through the local business community. Javier’s name was quietly but swiftly removed from the law firm's directory. He was escorted out of the building by security before he could even pack his desk, his reputation in the Texas legal circle completely destroyed before his first cup of coffee.

In a secure, private room at the Baylor University Medical Center, Sofia sat in a wheelchair, her right arm in a soft sling, her split lip stitched cleanly by the hospital's top plastic surgeon. Elena sat beside her, holding her uninjured hand, while Alex paced near the window, his phone pressed to his ear.

"Yes, General," Alex was saying. "I want the full forensic audit on the Robles Logistics Group. Check their customs declarations from the last five years. They’ve been hiding their debt in secondary offshore entities. I want every single line item scrutinized."

He hung up, turning to look at his daughter. The sight of her swollen face still sent a jolt of pure, physical agony through his chest.

"How are you feeling, sweetheart?" Alex asked, his voice softening completely as he walked over to her side.

"It still hurts to talk," Sofia whispered, her green eyes filled with a mixture of relief and lingering fear. "But... I feel safe. For the first time in months, Dad. Javier... he was so sweet in the beginning. But the moment we got engaged, it was like his mother took over his mind. They made me feel like I was crazy for wanting to keep my own things."

"You weren't crazy, Sofia," Elena said, her eyes flashing with a protective fire. "They are predators. They targeted you because they saw your kindness as weakness. They thought because your father and I were divorced, you had no one to protect you."

"They made a fatal mistake," Alex said, kneeling beside her wheelchair, just as he had done in Elena's apartment hours earlier.

"They forgot that you are a Sterling. And in this family, we don't negotiate with thieves. We destroy them."

The Counter-AttackThe door to the medical room opened, and Vance stepped inside, his expression grim but focused.

"Alex, we have a problem," Vance said, pulling up a video on his tablet. "Carmen Robles is not going down quietly. She just held an impromptu press conference outside their corporate headquarters."

On the screen, Carmen stood before a crowd of local reporters, her face a mask of simulated grief. She was holding a handkerchief to her dry eyes.

"My family is being victimized by the billionaire Alex Sterling," Carmen sobbed into the microphones. "Our son Javier married his daughter Sofia out of pure love. But Mr. Sterling is using his immense wealth to launch a hostile takeover of our family business because he wanted to control their marriage. Sofia is mentally unstable. She suffered a self-inflicted episode in the hotel suite, and now her father is using her injuries to blackmail us!"

Elena gasped, her hands curling into tight fists. "That lying snake! How dare she! She beat our daughter bloody and now she’s calling her unstable?"

"It’s a classic defensive play," Vance explained. "They are trying to sway public opinion and create enough legal noise to force us into a settlement. If they can tie up the properties in a lengthy civil suit, it buys them time to restructure their debts."

Alex stood up, his face entirely calm. The calm before a Category 5 hurricane.

"They want public opinion?" Alex said, a cold, dark smile spreading across his lips. "Vance, did you get the security footage from the Ritz-Carlton corridor?"

May you like

"We did," Vance replied. "It’s high-definition. It shows Carmen and her sisters entering the suite with a heavy leather strap, and it clearly captures Javier standing outside the door, listening to Sofia's screams for twenty minutes."

"Send it to the District Attorney," Alex commanded. "And Vance? Don't just file it. Leak the first ten seconds of Javier standing outside that door to the media. Let's see how the public feels about their 'pure love' when they watch a husband listen to his wife being tortured."
