Chapter 3 - The Public Reckoning

The Viral ShockwaveThe internet does not forgive, and it does not forget.
By 2:00 PM, the leaked ten-second clip of Javier Robles standing outside the luxury hotel suite door had gone completely viral. The audio was horrifyingly clear: the muffled, agonized screams of Sofia pleading for her mother-in-law to stop, followed by Javier’s distinct, polished voice saying: "Mom, don't hit her too much in the face. People will notice tomorrow."
The public backlash was instantaneous and total.
The hashtag #JusticeForSofia trended number one worldwide. Protestors began to gather outside the Robles Logistics headquarters in Dallas, carrying signs demanding the immediate arrest of Carmen and Javier. The law firm of Harrison & Croft issued a formal public apology, stating they had severed all ties with Javier Robles and were cooperating fully with the police investigation.
Inside their family mansion in the wealthy enclave of Preston Hollow, the Robles family was under virtual siege.
"Turn off the TV!" Carmen screamed, throwing her gold-plated remote control at the massive flat-screen monitor. "Turn it off!"
Her husband, Hector Robles, the patriarch of the logistics empire, stood by the window, his face pale as he watched the crowd of angry protestors and news vans gathering outside their high security gates.
"We are ruined, Carmen," Hector said, his voice hollow. "The port authority just revoked our lease. Our major shipping partners in Mexico and Europe have canceled their contracts. We have zero cash flow. Our banks are calling in our loans. We are going to file for bankruptcy by Friday."
"No!" Carmen shrieked, her expensive diamond earrings shaking as she paced the marble floor. "We have the marriage contract! Javier is still her husband! If we can force Sofia to sign a non-disclosure agreement, we can sue Alex Sterling for tortious interference!"
"Mom, look at this," Javier whispered from the sofa, his hands shaking as he held his phone.
He showed her a notification from the Dallas County District Court.
"The Grand Jury just handed down an indictment. Felony aggravated assault, extortion, and unlawful restraint. They’ve issued warrants for your arrest, Mom. And mine."
The ArrestBefore Carmen could reply, the sound of police sirens echoed through the quiet, tree-lined streets of Preston Hollow.
Two tactical police transport vehicles pulled up to the gates of the Robles estate. Within minutes, the front doors were breached. Police officers in tactical gear flooded the mansion, their weapons drawn.
"Carmen Robles! Javier Robles! You are under arrest!" the lead officer barked, slamming Javier onto the polished marble floor and pulling his hands behind his back.
"Get your hands off me!" Carmen screamed as she was pressed against the grand piano, her expensive silk blouse staining with sweat. "Do you know who we are? We are the Robles family!"
"I don't care if you're the Queen of England, lady," the officer replied, clicking the metal handcuffs tightly around her wrists. "You’re going to jail."
As they were escorted out of the mansion in front of a wall of flashing cameras and shouting reporters, Carmen looked up.

Standing across the street, leaning against a sleek black limousine, was Alex Sterling. He didn't say a word. He simply watched them being loaded into the police van, his grey eyes containing a cold, triumphant satisfaction that made Carmen’s heart freeze.
She realized, too late, that she had tried to play a game of chess with a man who specialized in burning the board.
