Chapter 4 - The Fortress Defended

By midnight, the Beacon Hill estate was transformed into an impenetrable fortress.
Four armed security guards in plain clothes patrolled the brick courtyard, while high-definition thermal motion sensors monitored the perimeter walls. Upstairs in the east guest suite, Emma was fast asleep under a thick goose-down duvet, clutching Scout the stuffed fox, completely unaware of the storm brewing around her.
Sophia sat in the armchair by the guest room window, staring out at the snow beginning to fall gently over the city.
Alessandro walked into the room quietly, carrying two mugs of warm tea. He handed one to her and sat on the wooden bench across from her chair.
"She sleeps peacefully," Alessandro said softly, looking toward the bed where Emma snored faintly.
"She feels safe here," Sophia replied, taking a sip of the tea. "For two years, every time a car slowed down outside our apartment building in East Boston, I held my breath. I thought we were alone in the world, Alessandro."
"You're not alone anymore," Alessandro said. He looked down at his hands—hands that had built an empire through fear, but now felt an overwhelming urge to offer shelter. "When my father died twenty years ago, his business partners tried to tear our family apart. I learned very quickly that if you show vulnerability, people destroy you. So I built walls. I tested everyone. I thought suspicion was a shield."
He looked at Sophia, his expression vulnerable and raw. "Your daughter taught me in five minutes that walls don't protect you. They just keep you trapped in the dark."
Before Sophia could speak, the estate's emergency alarm hummed softly—a quiet, pulsating blue light flashing on the wall control panel.
Alessandro instantly stood up, pulling a sleek black 9mm pistol from his coat holster. "Stay in this room. Lock the door from the inside and do not open it for anyone except me or Frank."
"Alessandro, please be careful!" Sophia pleaded, standing up.
He offered her a quick, reassuring nod, then stepped out into the hallway, closing the heavy oak door behind him.
Downstairs in the main entrance hall, Frank was waiting near the security monitors, holding a tactical radio.
"Report," Alessandro commanded, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register.
"A black van just parked two blocks down on Mount Vernon Street," Frank reported quietly. "Three men jumped the rear garden fence near the carriage house. They disabled the motion sensor line on the west gate. They're pros, boss. Romano’s heavy hit team."
Alessandro checked the magazine of his weapon with a sharp CLICK.
"They came into my home," Alessandro whispered, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure steel. "They came for the child. Disable the outdoor lights. Do not call the police yet, Frank. Let them step all the way inside."
"Understood, sir."
Moments later, the glass doors of the conservatory shattered softly as three men dressed in black tactical gear slipped into the dark mansion. They moved quietly, trained weapons raised, heading directly toward the grand staircase leading to the bedroom suites.
They thought they were invading the home of a soft billionaire.
They were wrong.
As the lead intruder reached the second step of the staircase, the heavy iron chandelier above the foyer suddenly plunged the room into absolute darkness!
CRACK!
Before the intruder could react, Frank stepped out from the shadow of the archway, driving an iron baton into his neck, dropping him to the marble floor instantly!
The second intruder spun around, raising his suppressed pistol—BANG! A shot tore through the drywall, but Alessandro stepped inside his guard from the shadows, grabbing his wrist, twisting it until the bone popped, and slamming his forehead into the man's nose with bone-crushing force!
The intruder collapsed onto the rug, groaning in agony as his weapon clattered across the floor.
The third intruder—Marco, Vittorio’s lead lieutenant—backed away toward the shattered conservatory door, his gun raised, panic filling his eyes as he realized they had walked straight into a kill zone!
"Don't move, Marco," Alessandro’s voice echoed from the dark gallery above.
Marco spun around, raising his gun toward the balcony—but Alessandro fired a single, precise shot!
THUD!
The bullet shattered Marco’s right shoulder, sending his pistol flying into the decorative fountain as he fell to his knees, screaming in pain, clutching his bleeding arm!
Alessandro walked down the grand marble staircase, his brass-tipped leather shoes clicking sharply against the stone, his weapon held loosely at his side. He stepped up to Marco, looking down at the fallen lieutenant with absolute, terrifying indifference.
He reached down, grabbed Marco by the collar of his tactical vest, and dragged him toward the front door, throwing him onto the snow-covered driveway where two more security guards pinned him to the ground.
Alessandro pulled out his phone and dialed Vittorio Romano’s private number.
May you like
Vittorio answered on the first ring, expecting victory. "Is it done?"
"Vittorio," Alessandro spoke into the phone, his voice cold enough to freeze the ocean. "Your three men are bleeding on my driveway. Your lieutenant, Marco, is currently weeping in the snow. And tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM... I am coming to your dry docks to take everything you own."
